watched the Dark Knight Returns part 1 & 2. Thought it was good animation and liked the different adaptations of the characters. Joker seems more "in love" with Batman than in other installments. Which is weird but makes sense why he is obsessed with Batman.
This particular story arc was done in the 90's by the guy responsible for Sin City. It pissed off a lot of older Batman fans because it was far more violent and Batman was much more aggressive.
During the original Batman Animated Series there was an episode which told short versions of alternate universe Batman's though the eyes of 3 different kids. One of those kids was the Robin featured in this version of Batman who told a good portion of the Mutant story arc in part 1.
It really blows me away that they did this. I always thought the rendition they did in Batman TAS was mostly poking fun at how wildly different each version of Batman is. But i always liked the Frank Miller version. The Dark Knight Rises does an excellent job of capturing the art style and story of the comics.
I also like that it's very clearly 1990's art with a 2010's mentality. It retains the cleanness of the animated series with the style of the Frank Miller comics. Even though some of the art and design feels corny to me. It would be worse if they did it differently. Even muscle man Gordan just seems to make sense.
I'm not 100% on Jeffery Dahmer style Joker. But it's a minor character trait. It's just too bad that the extra character they gave him comes off as a perverted rather then crazy. The Joker is still in there but he's got some pent up sexual aggression going on in his speeches.
I do love that we now have a Batman cartoon for every age group. We have advanced as a society.
