The Ish Has Hit The Fan.

So I was perusing some websites that I frequently frequent, and I came across this little article at PSXExtreme.

http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/5105.html

The article tells a story about Dave Jaffe making a blog post that had a picture of an email to Scott Campbell.  It was basically giving Scott some direction on what he liked and did not like.  So he blurred out some words that made it look like Twisted Metal but the problem was he didn't blur it enough.  People on his blog started just reading it and posting it in his reply section.  He then made the blurred text completely BLACK, until Sony finally dropped the hammer on his blog and I think his website is going to be over for a little while.

----CLOSING TIME----
Hey all- need a big break from blogging. Who knows- as always- I may come back to it but right now feels like a great time to stop.

To all of you regular readers who have gone with me on this journey over the years...we're just getting started! Soon our website for EAT SLEEP PLAY will be up and blazing and you'll be able to find me there on company blogs and the EAT SLEEP PLAY forums.

Until then- have a great start of the summer movie season and I'll chat with you all soon!

Much thanks and much gratitude for all your support over the years!

later ya'll!

David

The way I think this could work is if you actually get ejected from the car when the armours nearly gone- sorta like the wat the tourist flew out of cars on Rougue Trip.

Maybe you then get to try and survive on foot until you can get to an item that gives your car back?

I don't know but I'm still a bit worried about the game becoming a partially on foot mission based game.

Its still great to read though but Jaffe needs to be careful as I think his team have a bad (good)? habit of dropping little nuggets that appear to be not released by Sony.

I think he will play it safe now for a while and judging by the last post, he'll go quiet for a while.

Still tho, this just builds me up even more....

At least the game sounds like its definitely not just going to be a minor update like V8:A!!

I would just like to add Scold that judging by what I'm reading I wouldn't be suprised if the new game is the 2nd M rated title??

Maybe eh?

Judging by the leaked screen shot, I would say the game fits the black atmosphere, and I would definitely lean toward a M rating.  Even if it doesn't have storylines, which I don't think it will.  If Jaffe thinks the game lacks "personality" then the game cannot have storylines, as the story just oozes personality.

I agree about the ejecting from the car, as Jaffe says someone is stumbling, looking at approaching cars, scrambling to get to their feet.  So I would think you control the driver on fire kind of in TMB.  Maybe if you live a certain amount of time, you can get your car back at a small amount of health, or if you run over the driver (and he gets "dragged by the car") you get some sort of bonus.

Or maybe instead of storylines, it's taking a weird turn and its humans vs non humans.  Would make two difinitive teams if there is a team focus this time, instead of every man for themselves.  It just seems like the current theme for multiplayer gaming nowadays.  Warhawk, MGO, Gears, Resistance, and Killzone all have that same theme, but then Twisted Metal is a different creature.

I just can't get out of my head how when faced with the blunt question, "If you make a TM, how would you do it?" He said he would have to modernize it, because what worked in 2001 won't work "10 years later"...his own quote.  So I'm thinking the formula we know is going to be turned on its head.

I'm not scared though, I think Jaffe will bring a fresh spin that could make hardcore fans love the depth and new players come and join the fun because of all the new things Jaffe is adding to quote unquote "wow the crowds".

Quote:
-Ah who the hell am I kidding? Smiley-
It's 3:15- can't sleep.

A few things:

-Just woke from a dream where I was looking after my dying father. Now my dad- thank God- is very much alive and healthy, thanks for asking Smiley...but in the dream he was in bed in some hospital and dying. Now before that, in the same dream, I was working at one of the junkyards he used to own and run when I was a kid. But in the dream I was a grown up and I was doing a really good job running his yard and dad seemed real pleased with me and my work. And then- just like that- we're in the hospital and he's dying but only he's not an old man anymore, but he's a little, little boy...like around 3 or 4. And he's so sad and so little and so cute. And he sits up in bed and I tell him it's ok and that I'm there for him. And I ask him if he wants to stay or if he wants to move on. And I hope so much that he'll say he wants to stay but I know the answer he is going to give: he shakes his head yes when I ask him if he wants to go be with "gaga" (the name we had/have for his mother who has been dead for a long time). And so- sad as I am- I pick my father up- who is this little boy- and I hold him as I slowly spin him around the room in a warm, tight embrace and tell him everything will be fine and that I love him and that I have him and that it's all ok.

And then I wake up.

And now I feel sort of sad, like I'd like to call dad right now. But it's 5 am in Alabama and I don't want to wake anyone. I'd like to go hug my kids too, but its 3am here and I don't want to wake them either.

Man, having small children of my own- who are the age of my dad in the dream- I realize that the bonds between parent and child (in both directions) are so much stronger than just physical. Dreams like this make me wonder if there is something to the idea that we are all old spirits who have known each other many lives over and we just keep going round and round with the same spirits as our companions. So in one life a spirit is your dad,in the next that same spirit is your kid, sometimes your next door neighbor. Is that what is going on with this life? Or something else entirely? Well, whatever it is, it reminds me of how wonderful and precious family is.

Either that or I've just been watching too much IN TREATMENT on HBO....which- truth be told- IS the case Smiley Amazing, amazing show!

- Yes, I am still blogging. I was pretty bummed by the leak from our game yesterday. Not so much the information that got out (there really was nothing in there that gave away what we were making or breached any sort of trust I have with the team or with Sony). I was just annoyed that someone would actually go thru the trouble of not only defogging the images (that I clearly was sharing with the net community and clearly didn't want defogged) but then that they would go so far as to post the info on the net. I know I'm a naive idiot for being surprised but sometimes the behavior of folks on the net can really just wear you down. But then you remember that most folks who come here and post about games and pop culture all over the net are just nice, passionate people. I have no desire to stop blogging- something I love to do- just because from time to time there are going to be people who do shit that really gets under my skin.

- On that same front, I'd been thinking alot about this idea that I would rather be known, loved, hated, ignored, forgotten, etc. all solely based on the work I contribute to, and not for my blog. Now I know my blog is not some massive thing...it's not like I get a million readers a month or anything. BUT it has brought me more attention than any of the games I've been involved with and sometimes I'm like: well what's the point of that? Better to not have a blog and if anyone thinks twice about me besides my loved ones, it will be because the work we do makes folks happy. And I do feel that way...strongly.

I've seen other folks I admire (in games, in comic books) stop blogging and there's something that feels kind of dignified about that action. Like those folks are saying: the work will speak for me, not some blog.

And again, I really appreciate that stance. It's a stance I often think about taking ( clearly)...

BUT I also know that it's 2009 and blogs and the internet are amazing tools for connecting with folks who DO like and support the stuff you and your team creates. I mean, how nice it is to be able to connect directly with the folks you have a hand in entertaining. How nice it is to hear that you and the team have made something that has really touched someone's life in a positive way. And how nice to share a look into our world with people who are clearly interested in such things. It is an amazing gift and opportunity and while there is a strong part of me that feels that the work should just speak for itself, a stronger part of me tells me that blogging is something I don't want to give up doing.

So I won't and I'm not.

And at the same time, me and the team are going to bust our butts to bring ya'll some of the best games you've ever played and allow the work to speak so loudly for itself that this whole worry will be a moot issue.

But so long story short: I don't want to stop blogging; so I'm not going to.

I do want to go to bed tho. I've put my LA trip on hold as I have to work this weekend Sad And I'm getting tired so I'll just see you all next week!

Later!

David

yeah he aint going anywhere it seems which is good.

I would love to see a serious emphasis on team matches (Team Weapon) and its looking very possible.

I definitely would like to think that if there is a 'foot' mode then it is merely a part of the car combat.

I mean I wouldn't expect this to turn into Warhawk or anything.

Jaffes last post had me a little confuddled though.

I mean surely he must have realised that there will always be ppl who will try and figger out mysteries??

I mean why post that stuff in the first place if you're not challenging people to discover.

I don't know, maybe I'm getting the wrong end of the stick.

if so, then I apologise.

I just finished reading all that earlier today...  I agree with archminion that posting the letter from Scott was a foolhardy move on Jaffes part. He had to know people were going to attempt to figure out the blurred parts. Maybe he thought no one would be able to do it which I could see... but given the circumstances with sony not allowing an announcement yet... he never should have let people see it to begin with in any form. This would all be so much easier if they were just allowed to let people know what they're doing already. They've got to be getting really fucking irritated by now.

I'm not to sure about the whole out of car thing myself. I don't want to see this turn into a mission based one playthrough put it back on the shelf type of game like so many others out there right now. If what you two are speculating is correct I'd be fine with it as a last stitch effort to survive that does sound pretty fun yet it seems that the time involved would eat up the clock in online for a slim chance of staying alive in the meanwhile people are taking kills that you'd have already had a chance at if you just died then and there and respawned. It would be a great feature for single player but I see it as a detriment in online play... and the online is what I'm most concerned about... I'm honestly really worried that all the new features they're looking to include will ruin the simplicity of the game. Depth is good I'm not opposed to it but less is more in games like this. Kill or get killed then move on. Thats the formula that has worked for so long If they can somehow make the new features run fluidly with this style of play then I'm all for it... but I am definitely reluctant to accept too much change... I've seen way to many games change up the most essential gameplay mechanics to the point where I couldn't stand playing it... I'd be fucking crushed if this happened to TM.

you know when I read it again it really makes me think more and more of a single character in the level like Rogue Trip or CaC.

Maybe they incorporating a similar style of mode into the new game?

God the speculation...

speculation aside, I'm not too worried about it. every TM game Jaffe has had his dick in was good.. the only bad ones were the ones he had nothing to do with, so he's obviously got a grip on what it takes to make TM work

when reading the parts about the out-of-car portions, my first impression is that your driver is in some way ejected from the car.. not so much for on-foot mission-based mayhem, but what I see is maybe there is a certain area on your life bar where there is the possibility of being thrown from the car, via a hard impact, and from there, you're on the clock to get back to your car or face certain doom from the other contestants. I mean, think about it; you get blasted and tossed form your car.. your driver is frantically trying to get back up to avoid being run over or shot.. you gotta run back to your car before something happens.. tell me how much your heart would be pounding during that mad dash back to your car

I think he's got this game figured out. my only wonder is his take on the game "lacking personality". like Scold said, story mode is nothing but personality.. so I guess either the story mode isnt there or they got some weak ideas thrown in at the moment, and he's not happy with them

Yeah, I definitely think that ESP and Jaffe are looking at being tossed out of the car as well, and NOT mission based gameplay.  With that being said, however, how would this handle online.  Can a person for example if ejected and said car is close to destroyed, or an opponent destroys the car before the driver can reach it...

Can that driver then post up on a corner with a bazooka?  It would be similar to TM1 refs I suppose but actually human players.  Because if they honestly didn't have a weapon, or the opponent driver doesn't get a bonus for running the ejected driver over...than the out of car portion just walking around would be completely pointless.  In fact, you could leave an ejected driver just walking around to punish/taunt him and then just keep hammering other cars.

It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out.  Maybe Jaffe and/or someone at Sony already canned the idea entirely due to the leak just to keep face.  It sounds like something not implemented yet but something Jaffe was planning and designing.

Just being thinking as well.

Been thrown from the car opens up more ops:

For starters its more valid now to have an obviously very detailed driver BUT if you can customise the cars then whats to say you can't customise the driver?

Maybe with downloadable/unlockable skins, features etc but also with an option to biuld your drivers look from scratch! Proper avatars.

Imagine actually running down your TMA buddies in person then giving him shit with the headset!

What about the possibility of special finishers and humiliations for downed drivers- input one of several special combos as you approach the guy and you can either knock him flat, flip him over the bonnet, impale him etc, rip clothes off with the impact for added humble factor?

The vehicles could have special Carmageddon style retractable spikes, buzzsaws etc that are only activated with a combo for this purpose?

Of course there'd need to be rewards to. Health or missile bonuses depending on the impact.

I think it would be kind of cool if they incorporated on-foot into TM, they could do like a Transporter 3 thing to where you have a bomb strapped to you and if you dont get back to your car in an alotted time you explode. I cant wait to see how this all pans out.

wow, nice find...it seems to me its more like a custom animation, rather than a car just blowing up to nothing, maybe they'll incorporate different types of finsihing moves. Say if you kill someone with a ram, that driver is flung out and you can run him over and drag him behind you as a taunt for your opponents.  Or if you use machine guns to finish off someone you would see blood fly out the windows signifying that you shot the driver and so on and so on...I used to think that out of the car combat would throw the balance and rythym off, but I think it would be fun just trying to survive a little while longer on foot. I would think a couple of machine gun bullets put any driver down for good.  Im with dave on giving TM a personality with character animations and finishes...i pray for a fresh breath of air in this game
