3D Realms Goes Belly Up

Well it looks like we'll officially never get to see Duke Nukem: Forever ... at least not from the boys at 3D Realms. I cant' say this is much of a surprise... they've not really done anything in years.

After all the fucking around they did with DNF ... and if you ever checked out there message boards, the 3DR staff were gigantic pricks towards the fans ... it almost serves them right.

I wonder what will happen with Duke Forever? I think 3D Realms was partnered with Activision ... maybe the rights to the series fall over to Activision? God that would suck. I'd rather have NO Duke Nukem games then a new Activision Developed one every six months.

Duke Nukem Forever publisher Take-Two confirmed to Shacknews that it was not funding Duke Nukem Forever.

"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," said Take-Two VP of communications Alan Lewis in a prepared statement.

"In addition, Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever," he added.

Looks like it was Take-Two and not Activision that had the publishing rights. Though isn't Take-Two part of Activision? God I have no idea!  Cool

I'm still working on the theory that it serves these fuckers right.

Who knows how much of it is true... its an interesting read, though.

Take-Two is taking over publishing for all 3D Realms games. Including Duke Nukem Forever.

Now we may actually see the game before I die.

Take Two knows what they are doing.

Take Two owns all 12 Rockstar studios, and a couple other grat fanchises.  Take Two owns GTA, BioShock, Civilization and Mafia, all of the sports 2K (except football), Serious Sam, Midnight Club, Max Payne, and Manhunt...among others.  Take-Two is a very good developer and publisher, and I think that it's a PLUS for them to get to work on DNF.  They may actually finish it.

For some reason I thought Activision had there fingers in with Take-Two ... I have such a hard time following who does what, who owns who, and who works for what, in the video game industry. It seems like every day an old studio will close and five more will open up in its place ... most of the time made up of guys from the old companies.

If the franchise goes anyplace... I think Rockstar would be a really good fit. Isn't Rockstar doing the next Max Payne game?

I hope Rockstar gets it. Max Payne 1 and 2 were kickass, and I can't wait till 3

Yeah  Rockstar has a lot of studios all over the world.  They just finished Midnight Club, and are working on Max Payne 3, GTA V, LA Noire, and a currently unannounced PS3 exclusive (brand new IP), supposedly.

I do think this is good news for Duke Nukem Forever though.

EDIT - Rockstar is also doing Red Dead Redemption, sequel to Red Dead Revolver.  The sequel has more of an open fielded Fallout 3 type presentation, probably story driven similar to the Bully/GTA franchise.

The article was pretty good.

Real? On one end the chair thing is retarded sounding. Seems like it'd be less risky to just make a poor man rich. Plenty of people are able to keep a secret with a promise of financial stability.

But in a way it makes sense. The golden rule of crime. Cop didn't see it, it didn't happen. Even if he reported it, he would have no case. Especially without even being smacked in the face.

It also makes sense to actually go that far. Just an adult version of bullying. A broke programmer with no real experience in the world. Easy to manipulate. Very little chance of getting caught. Well unless they killed him in the office, which if this is all true, would be a dumbass move. You kill em after the clear death threat delivered on private property. Shit i know people who do that kind of threat as a practical joke. Not totally unrealistic. The mild absurdity almost adds to the realism.

I've known enough people who live by intimidation and dominance. They haven't much internal fear of anything except losing. They treat the law like a spoiled demon child treats his parents. Whatever they know they can get away with, it will happen. The business theives are scarier than the street theives are in some ways.

Personally i'd have agreed to sign. Then i'd probably freak out and stab Cliffy B first. I'd probably been framed for attempted murder too. That all depends how close that chair leg is to my neck though.

In the moment of a real life death threat. It's not exactly easy to do much but improvise.

I will say fighting a corporation as an individual is dangerous and stupid. Anything you could gain is overwritten by the fact you are fighting sheer social power. They will try to bury you one way or another.

Of course the whole thing could be part of continuing the story. Really some fan base should just mod Unreal Tournament 3 and make a damn Duke game. Seems the hardest part would be the graphics and animation.

That is why i like Valve the best. They don't drain the hype dick quite so hard. Yet still make awesome games that sell very well. Also they patch their shit.

If I remember right there was a Half-Life "Duke 3D" mod that some people were working on ... but 3D Realms put a stop to it claiming that they where infringing upon the rights to the game.

Those guys were gigantic pricks. I kind of hope Duke Forever does get released under another studio and George B. doesn't see a dime of the money.

Sony was publishing it to be exclusive to the PS3, but Sony backed out about 5/8 of the way through, and I believe Rockstar is funding the rest, but there wasn't any official announcements about it.  I believe it will probably come out for both systems with a PS3 timed exclusive possibly, for over half of the funding (minus marketing).  A couple places still list it as PS3 exclusive, but I would have my doubts since Sony backed out.  We'll probably hear more at E3.

Honestly I dont understand why everyone is so fascinated with another Duke game getting made. Usually when a game takes this long to come out by the time it actually does it sucks and disappoints. Think Too Human. Im sure if Duke Forever really did get released it would probably suck. If it was anything worth a damn or a game of great promise and passion it would have come out already. Yes, I know Duke Nukem was the shit so long ago but that doesnt mean it still would be.

I seen some of the "leaked" (cough**bullshit) videos and wasn't close to impressed.  The games coming out now have already surpassed that old ass stuff they decided to use for DNF in like 2002.

I'll rent it of course, I rent everything, but I'm not that interested.

I"ve got to dissagree here ... I think the leaked video looked pretty damn cool. The game looked FUN ... something a lot of modern FPS games seem to loose track of.

Then again I'm a big Duke fan ... so my opinion is a little on the one sidded in this argument.

Also this specific version of the game has been in development for about two years. So while technically they've been working on Duke Forever for over 10 years ... its not like this SPECIFIC version of the game has been in production that long.

There was the Quake build of the game, which quite frankly looked like it sucked. And the 2001 build of the game, which looked quite good. There must have been a small third build that they started after the 2001 version.

Do you guys buy into the whole George Brossard wanting to hold the game back on purpose? You've got to admit if it ever got released ... chances are it'd sell MEGA bucks just for the simple fact that its Duke Nukem Forever and its taken this long for it to see the light of day.
