PSP Problems

Ok, so I'm going on a trip pretty soon so I was checking out my PSP (which I haven't used in a while) to make sure everything is in working order. Well, I have a few issues.

I have to maneuver the power cord in the socket or unplug it / plug it back in to make the red light come on and charges. Sometimes I am flat unable to get it to charge at all.

Even when I get it to charge, sometimes I charge it for a long time, the battery doesn't last as long as I'd hoped it would.

I figured it might be a bad battery, but I can't seem to get it to work at all when I take the battery out even though it's still plugged into the wall, which I don't understand - shouldn't it work from the power from the wall? Anyway, I called gamestop and they don't even carry the old school batteries for launch PSPs.

Maybe it's the power cord? But then again, I have this battery grip thing that I plug into the PSP that functions as a secondary battery (sort of) that charges the PSP battery. It's basically just 4 AA batteries (NiMH at the moment) that charge the PSP when it's plugged in. Well, when I plug the power thing into that, it works fine. Maybe it's the PSP's power port itself? Or something else internal on the PSP? If so, how would one go about getting something like that repaired - does Sony do it, and how much does it cost if so? I'm probably out of warranty (it's a launch PSP).

Anyway, if anybody has any insight into this it'd be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with mine. If you dont use your psp or dont charge your battery for a very long time (you had mentioned you hadnt used your psp in a while) the battery goes bad and takes forever to charge and only lasts maybe an hour. Same thing happened with mine. Lack of use kills the battery's quality and performance and you would need to replace your battery. I replaced my battery and bought a new battery and i am now doing much better. I use my psp more often now than ever and now i have normal battery performance, much better!

Let me know how you with this. I am interested to see how it goes.

The battery thing still doesn't really explain why the cable is so sensitive and stops and starts charging often and randomly. Well, maybe it does, but I don't understand it.

Either way, it does look like my battery is in bad shape though, as I got it to charge (on and off, but for like 20 hours or some shit so even if it was on and off it should still have charged), and today it's still telling me the battery is almost dead. So you're probably right.

So now my dilemma is where the hell do I find a launch PSP battery? Gamestop doesn't carry them. And it can't be one of those jumbo ones either because my PSP grip thing wouldn't work if the battery pack was a huge bulge off the back.

Check eBay.  If you can't find one used and cheap, Sony would probably sell you one, but they will of course overcharge you for it.  But yes, it does sound like a bad battery to me.  Just to make sure, go to a GameStop and ask them if you could plug your PSP up to one of their used chargers.  If it does the same thing, then its definitely your battery, but if it charges normally, then your charger cord has a short in it somewhere.

I do think it's the battery though.

Hm, a short in the cord does kinda make sense, because it literally will not play if the battery isn't in the system.

I hate to use ebay because I don't know if it'll be here by the time I leave on the trip, I'd prefer a brick and mortar store. I'll check though.

Edit: And I'm not sure getting a USED battery would be a good idea either, since who knows how long they'll last.

The cord problem is a design issue, at least in my opinion. they couldnt have put it in a worse spot than the corner of the corner of the bottom. Why not the side or the very bottom? I have to believe its the design issue because my cord always gets lose if I play my psp for a while and has to continuously be readjusted. Could also be a problem im just having and you very well may have a short.

But the battery is definately the real issue Night. 20 hours and it died that quickly? something is wrong there. And why wouldnt gamestop have any of the old batteries for resale? I would also see about maybe trying amazon with fast delivery or gamestop online.

I don't know if that's the same issue. I'd turn on the PSP, plug it in, and leave it sitting on a table motionless and the light would randomly alternate between green and orange, like it's charging and then it's not.

I dunno why, they just didn't have any old school batteries at Gamestop. But I went ahead and ordered a "new" one off of eBay. Hopefully it'll be here before the trip - if not, I guess I'll look around elsewhere, but I don't know where. But I figured if I'm gonna go the online route I'd better do it fast.

I called gamestop today and they said they didn't have any used power cords, but I could buy one of their new ones and if it didn't resolve the problem I could get a full refund. I'll probably go do that tomorrow.

Actually, I think I got a car charger cable that came with the grip, I'll probably just give that a try to see if it's a cable issue.

You have a short then in the cord, maybe try another outlet to verify its the cord, but it sounds like the cord is shorted out or disconnected somewhere inside

Well, having 2 will guarantee never losing time over a game Smiley Assuming you order one and having to buy another one so you have one for the trip lol

Ahhh i forgot about the car adapter. There is your proof either way. And open up the charger box in the store and have them test the new cord or you have them test the psp with a cord they have. I know gamestop has that kind of stuff to test the crap out all the time

Good luck buddy.

I don't feel bad about shelving my PSP now after TMHO servers went down. I haven't touched the thing in months. After hearing what Night said about having to get another battery from lack of use, I might want to start it up every once in a while.

I should just buy another game from the fucking thing. The only game I've ever owned and still own is TMHO....

Its been known that lack of use of the psp battery is actually bad for its health. So basically if you dont charge the battery for looong periods of time, it looses its charge value.

Hellben was the first to tell me that and i did some of my own research and its true.

Yeah, the battery is fine. I was able to charge it all the way up when inside the grip cradle thing without an issue - I'm pretty sure it's the cable.

I'll probably drop by Gamestop and pick up a new one tomorrow.

Dont think they will. At least, not anytime in the near future.

If you have the original model of the PSP, it's not too uncommon for the port in which the power plug plugs into to go bad.  I've heard a few instances of it happening.  I'd borrow someone elses power cord or pick up a new one first though, just to be on the safe side and rule it out.  If you feel like getting crafty and taking it apart you can order a new power socket port.  It just has a plug that plugs into the board.  Not sure where to get one but I know there are a few sites which sale replacement parts.  I'm going to have to replace my LCD soon as well.
