Bands You Never Grow Tired Of
04/15/09 at 03:56:51

I was looking through my CD collection a few minutes ago, trying to decide what I wanted to listen to while checking my e-mail and shit tonight. When I thought up an interesting idea for a post, well at least I hope its interesting. Its interesting to me anyhow.

What are bands that you never grow tired of? This is different than what you consider to be your "favorite" bands ... I have lots of "favorite bands" ... but sometimes, you know how you just get tired of certain music? Nirvana would be an example of this. I quite enjoy them. I would consider them to be one of my "favorite bands" ... but honestly I find it easy to get bored with them. I can go months without listing to them. Which is odd, because I do really enjoy there stuff.

So bands that you never get tired of. Stuff you can listen to ALL the time and never have to take a break from. The bands you can pop a CD in and listen from track to track and not skip. Those are the ones that I'm interested in. Here is my personal list:

  • Alice In Chains

  • Motley Crue

  • Megadeth

  • Metallica

  • The Foo Fighters

Honestly... that is about it. I can listen to Alice year round and never grow tired. Same with Megadeth. Here is a post within a post.... I think I like Megadeth more than Metallica. Megadeth has had more of a constant sound throughout there career. I respect Metallica for making each album sound different from the rest, I even like Load and ReLoad (and parts of St. Anger) ... but damn, Megadeth was more constant.

Sevendust

And I dont think favorite bands is different from what I dont get tired of because all the bands I listed are my favorite bands BECAUSE I never get tired of listening to them.

This is why these posts never work...it just becomes a long list of replys that are nothing more than lists... lol... of course with no one really talking about anything.

anyhoo I'll take a crack at it... Really what you described about a cd that you have no urge to skip songs ...just listen to it all the way through contently... Thats always been the main way I judge a band. I won't own something that doesn't have substance that needs no skip button. So I've got alot of bands that I consider timeless in that regard. I'll only name a few so I don't get to rambling for too long...

First and Foremost.... TOOL! they can do no fucking wrong in my eyes... I've seen em five times now and I swear to god the show gets better every time... this last time I saw em when they toured for 10'000 days was the first time I was able to accquire a general admission ticket... also the first time I've ever seen maynards face. Every other time I saw them he always either had his back to the audience or was shrouded in darkness in the back of the stage... The first tattoo I got was of the weird alien hands from the special box set Salival... If your a big tool fan I'm sure your familiar with it. I've listened to these guys religiously since gradeschool. so there will always be an irrevocable sentiment that I attach to their work. A perfect Circle is the perfect extension of tool I feel... I like them much better now that they've switched up the band members. Twiggy was a nice touch his weird stylized riffs fit much better.. I don't know I always felt the first cd just sounded out of place with Maynard's singing. I could go on and on about what tool means to me as a person but I know no one cares so I'll just leave it at that.

Second... I've gotta go with Soulfly.  I love me some simple minded goverment hating anarchist primal animal rage metal. That band is the shit to me. Of course I grew up on them too. I've seen a shitton of bands over the years and their drumline at the end of their shows back in the 90's remains one of the memories that stands out above all else. Fucking fifteen guys sneaking onto the stage and just beating the shit out of these drums after brutal show like that it was just so fucking cool... (Wow this is becoming a you had to be there post, don't you fucking hate how you never realize it's a you had to be there story until your already like 75 percent into it) Anyways... They've recently come out with a couple new cd's thats definitely reminiscent of their old school shit... Dark Ages and Conquer... I've been listening to the fuck out of Conquer.. I love it. theres just something about simplistic Thrash Metal that I can't get enough of.

On a lighter note... I'm into indy rock quite a bit too... well a select few anyways... Bright Eyes must be on this list.. I was introduced to them in art school and the dudes lyrics are really penetrating. I can relate to it head on. Theres many times when I listen to (the story is in the soil in particular) that I have that feeling that we know each other ya know. Since no ones ever really heard of them I figure I might as well drop a few lyrics as an example if theres anyone that I haven't already forced these guys upon that wants to check it out LOL...  http://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/brighteyes/thetreesgetwheeledaway.html

Guess that's it I"m tired of typing now.

I concur with the importance of having cds that you dont want to skip tracks on. Most of my favorite bands fall into that category

For some reason I forgot to include Tool in my list as well...duh. Havent had the privilege of going to see them in concert. Missed the one show where they did actually come to my town and I hate myself for it all the time.

Metallica-mostly just Master of Puppets and And Justice For All. Seen Metallica once in concert, thankfully before they put out to much bullshit.

Stone Temple Pilots-for a pretty simple band Ive just always loved them. Ive always been a fan of Scott Wiedlan. His lyrics and his vocals.

Im reluctant to add Disturbed to my list because I just dont think they quite belong there. I like Disturbed a lot but they arent one of those bands that I put their cds in a listen to all the way through. I like most of their "hit" songs and a few others. Their first album I liked all the way through but the other ones not so much. Havent heard their latest album but the songs on the radio just dont really do much for me. They usually have really catchy rocking guitar riffs but for some reason the new songs just dont seem to be of the same calibur. If the radio songs are any indication the rest of the album probably isnt that good. I should still check it out though.

You know what band I can't get enough of ... and unfortunately they're not together anymore is Future Leaders of The World:

They have out once CD ... but holy shit that one CD is enough to knock your proverbial socks off! It rules. Its a shame the band broke up. Though the lead singer and ... the guitar player (I want to say) formed a new band called  MACHINA. They haven't put out any "official" stuff yet ... but I've got a copy of some of there demo tracks they've released. Basically it sounds just like FLOTW

with Disturbed, I bought The Sickness yrs ago and can still listen to it from Voices to Droppin Plates without skipping a single song. I also ended up with a burned copy of Believe which I like just as much. unfortunately, I havent been able to buy 10,000 Fists or the new one, but everything I've heard form them both, I like..

I got to see Tool at Ozzfest '98, but they were the only band me and my friends couldnt get close enough to see.. the crowd was so think, we got trapped in the back Sad  Tool really is one of the best bands ever.. the only reason I didnt add them to the list is 'cause I only have 'Undertow' and 'AEnima' so I dont feel I have enough of their albums to make a good judgment call. I do own the first A Perfect Circle album and was a big fan of it, but I havent had the chance to hear anything since Twiggy joined up..

ahhh yes, Soulfly. one of the most underrated and ignored bands out. these guys also played Ozzfest that yr, and it was insane to see the whole Soulfly Tribe come out and go into that wild tribal drum rage. I'm lacking in their albums tho, too..

another band that was just awesome, even tho they're not around anymore, was Coal Chamber. and I dont mean the "Shock The Monkey" shit either, I'm talking about the first album that had 'Loco', 'Sway', and 'Big Truck'.. that band easily is one of the big influences on how I chose to present myself then, and I'll never forget what kinda show they were able to put on, even with Dez's arm in a sling and Rayna's leg in a cast..

As much as I like Tool I never really liked A Perfect Circle. I like Maynard but the music and musicianship of A Perfect Circle just isnt up to par with what Tool does. As a drummer I really like Tool because their drummer Danny Carey is pretty good, something you dont see in a lot of popular bands these days.

Well then Xizor, you should like the drummer from APC then. Josh Freese is the best drummer ever. IMO better than Danny Carey; although I have to admit HIS beats are a bit more original than freese's but Freese just seems to have more skill and captivating rhythms.

But I am Biased...APC>Tool
