WoW: Addiction or Obsession

This topic is based off a youtube video I've stumbled across. That is a kid getting scolded to get off his PC.

The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwql6_RJ348

My point of this topic and this video proves, that a line is drawn between self-control and actual addiction. This is all self-control, there is no addiction put in it whatsoever. It's just some people don't have this control over themselves like this kid, and some people do have self-control like Kilrgrn.

It's people like this kid that make games out to be a "addiction" the term the media loves to use when describing games. As if they were drugs.

What's your opinions on this?

Parents have went to jail because of neglect of their kids because of that game.

Ive seen marriages break up because of WOW play and spouse or responsibilty neglect

The game is an obsesion and its only because players need to stay on top of the charts and always have the best of the best which is just dumb considering its pixelated non-realistic loot and gear.

I remember hearing about some guy at an internet face somewhere that died of starvation or some shit after playing StarCraft for days straight. That's amazing.

Really I don't know how much it has to do with the gmaes themselves. It's not like there is anything inherently in the game that makes you come back like nicotine. Some people just have no self control.

I made it 53 seconds into that video and had to shut it off. If I was that kids father I'd slap him upside the head and tell him to knock it the fuck off. Then I'd send his ass outside.

Seems to me that kid is probably been spoiled and is used to getting his way in everything else. That's the problem. My parents didn't let me sit around and play video games all summer long. My mom used to literally take the power plug away from my Sega Genesis. There was no iffs ands or butts about it. The next door neighbor kid and I would only get like two hours a day, after that ... done. Finished. Go outside. More parents need to do things like that.

I don't think video games are addicting.

Some may say "well what if everyone else around you did heroine, would you shoot heroine too?" and Id say yes. However if everyone around me played WoW I would punch them in the fucking face.

It's not necessarily the video games that are addicting, but it's the social interaction that people crave and don't receive.  When I moved out of Philly, I had about 40-50 RL friends that I seen and played with outside constantly, and when I moved to VA in HS and didn't have many friends at all the first year or two, all I did was surf the net and play games.

If you have something better to do with your life, most people would choose to do that, but people with a lot of downtime and not enough social interaction with people they truly care about, then they will shut themselves in and talk to virtual people in a virtual game, and get virtual accomplishments that don't mean shit in the real world.

LOL, if anything, mine sucks twice as bad.  I have virtual achievements and virtual trophies, all pretty much worthless.
