"Looking at this examination of GameStop's sales over at Gamasutra, it's hard to not get frustrated thinking about how much money the used game monolith is making on our undying urge to play "the next big thing." Pulling figures from the 10-K filings made each year by the company with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Gamasutra noticed some interesting figures. Notably among those: "between 41 and 46 percent" of the company's gross profits are coming from used game sales alone.

And how much is the company making, on the dollar, for each dollar they invest in the used game market? According to the analysis, GameStop is making 48 cents on every 100 spent in the used games trade -- a nearly 50% profit margin on a service that accounts for "22 percent to 28 percent of GameStop's revenue.""

Reading this yesterday just pissed me off even more. They make a killing off used games so why cant they give a little back to us the consumer? Or even up the pay of their employees who get minimum, and I mean minimum, wage.

Its because of this that a lot of stores are trying to get into the used game biz now. I recently heard Radio Shack is now jumping on the used game wagon.

yeah those video games workers make less than ANY fast food employees here in BC, and in Alberta it would be a landslide difference in pay (peeps bagging groceries at grocery stores make 13-15/hour)

I wonder if either mcdees/fast food places or gamestop gives benefits to full time employees?

I would much prefer a mcdonalds job to eb/gamestop, discount on food>discount on rip off priced games

I doubt either one gives benifits or anything. Those are not the kind of jobs people seem to aspire retireing at.

GameStops around here are alright.. some of the clerks can be stuck-up if they think you're some kinda "casual gamer"..

we got a small place here called Play 'N Trade, and they give pretty good for games and shit. they also hold tourney's for certain games thruout the month, where the winner will get a gift card for the store.. nothing to write home about, like $5 here and $10 there.. but its still fun

I must say I talked shit about the Gamestop near my house the last time I went there after having a bad experience, but I went in the other day to pick up my copy of Fuel and I just started shooting the shit with this dude that works there who Ive talked to quite a few times. Hes like an assisstant manager I think, anyways, we started talking about Fuel and he was like yeah I want to play the game as well and I went on about how I was taking a big chance in buying it because I didnt know if it would be good and how IGN had given it a bad review. So, he looks around to make sure the manager isnt near and then tells says look, if you dont like the game bring it back sometime after 5 and before we close and I will just put the price of the game towards Prototype. He said, Youre a good customer and I know you spend a lot of money here so Im going to take care of you. I said, Wow, thanks a lot thats really nice and cool of you. I mean, it blew me away that this guy would risk getting in trouble for someone he hardly knows at all. All he asked in return is that I gave him my impressions of the game.

Anyways it just goes to show that some people who work at these places are actually cool and down to earth if you take the time to bullshit with them. Im going to continue getting to know this guy if hes willing to do shit like basically let me "rent" a game from his store and hes an ass. man.

This I can vouch for. Make friends and you get posters, demos, employee discounts, and if the manager likes you, they tell you things non public. I had this type of reltoinship with a store back in freehold when Xbox and PS2 were the popular consoles. Now most of my shopping is online.
