The Unreal 3 engine is why everything looks so fucking bland this generation. I miss the days when consoles were simple enough that outsourcing development and licensing Unreal 3 wasn't a thing. Or a world where everyone went with the Crytek 2 engine. I'd buy a game based on the fact it's using their shit over Unreal 3.
I think that is partially why games like Dead Space looked so great. It's not so much that it was pushing more polygons. But it had it's own engine and art. It's like why Dubstep sucks. It's the same samples being played by a bunch of different people. Dubstep would be good if they wrote their own samples or at the very least it would sound unique and not like that 90's techno garbage. Still though the fact that they could even get Crysis 1 to run at 30fps on the X-box is damn impressive. I'm holding off on Crysis 3 on the PC because Crysis 2 got a pricedrop fairly quickly. So as much as i want to test the game on my PC i'm actually kind of having fun with Crysis 1 at the moment.
The absolute best part about Crysis on the PC is editing your base stats and doing your best Hulk impersonation with Physics on high. I haven't had so much fun just running around into NPC's since Vice City.
The best part about the next generation of consoles is going to be the physics and animation. I bet we still have to deal with 30FPS being the standard though. Even ID couldn't squeeze 60FPS out of the 360 for Rage and it was clearly developed for consoles. Metal Gear Rising Revengances frame rate is fucking sick and on that basis alone Devil May Cry sucks in comparison. If the new God of War is 30FPS i'm skipping it like i did God of War 3. I miss the PS2's framerates and i used to think it was fucking slow.
In fact go get Revengance. Seriously watching it on Youtube isn't the same. When you play it with that 60fps framerate you can really fucking tell how badly other developers fucking make their games. Platinum Games is the best thing to happen to the third person action genre since Sands of Time and Ninja Gaiden Black.
The irony in making youtube videos is no matter what you do you are still worth less than a cat or a laughing baby.
