Title: Which Singletrac/Incog property likeliest for PS5?
Post by MoshfieldAsylum on 03/17/19 at 22:59:48
Playstation 5 is in the near future and hopefully one of Singletrac's/Incognito's children return, to be developed by who I have no idea, but...

Who do you see it being?

Twisted Metal, Warhawk, and Jet Moto are the likely contenders. War of the Monsters is the underdog.
Or do you think a lesser popular property (Critical Depth for example) has a shot of being resurrected by Sony?
Or is it likely none of them will come back and the universe that Singletrac started is truly dead and buried in the next gen?

In don't think that any of those games are in the style of current Sony exclusives, wich, even if I've kinda always been a PS guy, I don't like.

I don't see Sony bringing back a style of games they've left behind in exchange for more cinematic/adventure games. A license like Jet Moto could be revived, but maybe as a VR thing.

I guess Twisted Metal has always had that movie-like thing because of Jaffee's background, so maybe they could resurrect it with a story mode not unlike Mortal Kombat 9's, retelling the events from TM 1, 2 and Head-On.

BTW, I don't think Sony owns Critical Depth, or Rogue Trip for that matter.

With the current popularity of battle royal games it's a crime not to hame a new Twisted Metal game.

GT Interactive produced Critical Depth, and Rogue Trip.

Any game that Scott Campbell was involved in would be a great candidate for a remake.

Either Sony fails to see the potential of the TM franchise or there not willing to make the effort for whatever reason.

We may see something in the future, my hope has dimmed but not gone.

I know GT Interactive published Rogue Trip and Critical Depth, I just meant that maybe Sony could possibly acquire the rights somehow.

The legal situation of those games is actually very confusing.

For one, when GT Interactive was founded it's whole thing was that developers would retain their intellectual property.

Unfortunately for them when they purchased SingleTrac they weren't getting Twisted Metal/Warhawk/Jet Moto with the acquisition, so it's obvious that SingleTrac developed Rogue Trip as if they were making a Twisted Metal, thus the game is more of a Twisted Metal spinoff than it is a Twisted Metal rival ala Vigilante 8.  so I don't think SingleTrac would have wanted there to be a Rogue Trip sequel. What they did instead was incorporate some Rogue Trip elements into 2012's Twisted Metal (the playable Helicopter, how Vermin's remote guided special was like the remote guided weapon from RT, the name Vermin, the name Meat Wagon, the vehicular design of TMX Meat Wagon is that of Rogue Trip's Ozone, Ghost Town Gulch/Dead Man's Crossing is similar to The Gulch map from Rogue Trip)... TMX basically acknowledges Rogue Trip as part of the Twisted Metal series, so there's no reason to bring back Rogue Trip. It's like how in Mortal Kombat Jarek and Kira are basically Kano, but you know you'd rather just get Kano in a new MK than a substitute character. Why bring back Rogue Trip to substitute for Twisted Metal? it doesn't make much sense.

And I think EatSleepPlay technically had the intellectual property rights of Rogue Trip. I know GT Interactive became Atari, Inc. and they filed for bankruptcy. Since then they have been selling off game rights, game assets, etc. but apparently Rogue Trip and Critical Depth are not among the games they have sold or still currently own, so I can only figure that the rights remained with the developers, albeit since they didn't have the publishing rights, there was no way for the original games to be re-released on the PSN store.
It's too bad Critical Depth wasn't published by SingleTrac, as they had originally intended to do. That would have made things simpler. Critical Depth on PS5 would be so dope.
Another War of the Monsters fighting game would be great too, especially if Mecha Sweet Tooth returned along with another Twisted Metal guest fighter... like a giant Mr. Grimm, haha.

Twisted Metal as a battle royale is obvious, but also I could see Jet Moto as a budget or free-to-play game on PSN.

they should re-release TM:B on PS5 remastered like Shadow of the Colossus was on PS4 then add in TMBO and have some DLC characters and story with some familiar characters... Twister, Mr. Slam, Thumper, etc. TMB is the best selling TM it still sells as downloadable game even on PS4 so your not making a new game but your still staying true to the series the gamble is worth it for Sony and if it takes off then we might get a legit new one and maybe just maybe Jaffe will do it if the price is right lol ;D

Great idea Grimm, and yes I believe it would have a positive effect with Sony.

If battle royale is where twisted metal is heading maybe it is better off dead. I hope they'd keep the game modes introduced in PS3 but make all cars have a specific driver like the classic Twisted Metals. Also Critical Depth would be a great choice to remake or make a 2nd installment.

I'd take a battle royal Twisted Metal if done right.  That's practically what it was anyway.

Still, I don't think it will be done right.

Also, I'm shocked no one has voted for Warhawk (not even me). Honestly, in my opinion that's the property most likely to return.  The original was very popular and was one of Sony's longest running online games, and highly respected.

To this day there remains nothing out there quite like it.
