Title: What is there besides Twsited Metal?
Post by RustedTruck on 01/30/15 at 06:34:16
It's been such a long time since I got to play any Twisted Metal and now i'm feeling the void. I could easily go back to TM PS3 but I absolutely played the heck out of it for a long time and i'm just left wanting more of the crazy action online and off and the story in a new chapter. If there is nothing new on a TM for the new gen systems than what else is there to fill the emptiness of the Car Combat genre? Can we have Vigilante 8 back? Rogue Trip ? Heck!! I'll even take a new Roadkill without hesitation. I know the genre is not the most profitable but with some effort they could make the best of it like having an advertising campaing or whatever political garbage term is there to let gamers know that your game exist. I just want to blow up cars with bat shit crazy fucking people behind the wheel.

:::::::::checks board:::::::: Ok. Awsome. This isn't TT Wall! It's Brawl! It's so yummy......

Basically, no.Good in theory but not for car combat anymore. Not unless a developer is going to reinvent the wheel really and make a current gen car combat game.

After what happened to TMPS3, I would be sure there wouldn't be to many of today's developers willing to embark on that road again. Or a current gen console for that matter. Nintendo sure as fuck ain't gonna do it, Sony has already been burned by it, and Microsoft can't get the rights to TM without MAYBE shelling out a shit ton of cash, and I highly doubt MS would pony that money up, or Sony letting their biggest competitor have their exclusive.

And that's where it's at really. Money. Would any car combat game make MONEY? Bottom line, profit margin, successful launch, money making game?

I personally don't see it, and I'm pretty sure there won't be a car combat game anytime in the near future.

I'm talking like 20 years from now.  :D

Mad Max 2015 looks good. It's only single player but I'm still looking forward to it.

Are you only talking about vehicular combat with guns and missiles ? If not, you may have heard about Wreckfest and Carmageddon:Reincarnation. They're both very fun (especially Wreckfest IMHO), even though they're still Work In Progress.

Could always go old school with Interstate '76/'82.

I believe a vehicle combat game can profit if marketed and supported by its devs/publishers. I honestly believe Twisted Metal 2012 would have done much better on the sales charts had the server issues not plagued it during both the online demo and the launch. Even though I didn't encounter many errors during those days, many others did, and it was simply a terrible first impression by word of mouth. Sony stopped marketing it basically after it hit the shelves, and didn't give the game a chance. The game's issues at launch still brands the game as buggy to this day, even though the few persistent issues that still exist in current day are relatively minor. I really don't believe it's fair to say Sony gave Twisted Metal 2012 a fair chance to prosper, and although I get there were plenty of huge titles that were released within that time period, Sony burned themselves. For goodness sakes, there were vehicle models that had been developed for DLC which were fully polished, but apparently it would have took much effort to balance and release them.

I think I recognize you from the early days. TM PS3 is still quite active and there's a lot of us veterans that still play nearly on a daily basis, so don't feel shy to pop in again.

I found a game called Gas Guzzlers Extreme the other day, which looks like it has the combat of Twisted Metal and the racing/realistic car designs of Gran Turismo. It's about $20 on Steam.

A lot of times if I'm watching TM videos on YouTube, there'll be a recommended video for Gas Guzzlers Extreme claiming it to be "The New Twisted Metal" in the video title. That's just terribly misleading. Like almost every game in recent years that claims to be from the "vehicle combat" genre, it's a racer first and a vehicle combat game second. It'd be like calling Full Auto the new Twisted Metal. Those games can be fun, but there's a major difference between battle racers with deathmatch and objective modes tacked on, in comparison to games with mechanics and physics designed from the ground up for vehicle combat.

I have some qualms with Mad Max but the open world and driving is looking tight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2RG3nsqPA8

I wish the car combat wasn't based so much on ramming. I think that should be a last resort for realistic reasons. I don't care for the hand combat. I would've been happier with more ammo, knives, arrows, and weapons. There's also a bit sluggish feel from appearances. Still early to confirm all this for sure, but at the moment it's looking a bit meh.

Lately I like to play a lot of ARKHAM KNIGHT for the Batmobile/BatTank combat.

Car combat like Twisted Metal is rare. It trended during the PS1 days, and just a little with PS2 like that MOTOR MAYHEM game Adonael mentioned. Outside TM only Vigilante 8 really succeeded in making a fun car combat game series that had good gimmick and art direction. I also thought Singletrac's CRITICAL DEPTH game took the TM concept (and gameplay engine) into interesting territory with a submarine combat game.

Twisted Metal probably needs to be successful again in order for the genre to revive. Maybe.

Wasn't crazy about the Mad Max game at first but its really grown on me the more I play it. It's sort of like gaming comfort food for me. Its a great game to come home and relax and unwind after a long day at work driving around the open world getting into car combat, collecting shit, beating up dudes, and taking over bases.

The photo mode alone is worth the price of admission though. I probably spend at least a third of my time playing the game making cool screenshots. Here are some of my favorite ones. I recommend clicking on some of these and blowing some of them up in a browser to truly appreciate all the detail:

Nice Mad Max photos, Xizor. I've been getting more into that game as well. There is something oddly comforting and relaxing about driving around in a wasteland and taking over bases from shitheels. Also like driving through storms. That shit is fun.

I played Rocket League for the first three weeks or so after launch, but dropped it at the time since it started feeling shallow to me. I've been playing it again since the start of the new year, and I'll say I'm enjoying it again. The level of competition has gone up, and it takes a lot of skill with both positioning and execution to do well these days.

I used to play some FULL AUTO 2 on ps3. The online had potential but hardly anyone played it, and its slow system of unlocking weapons/upgrades made the matches between veterans and newbs too unbalanced to be fun (similar to TMX). the game would have been better more focused on the car combat though. I didn't like the races. DEAD IN THE WATER for PS1 similarly had that problem. The races stunk, but the (boat) combat was fun. CEL DAMAGE however, managed to do both modes well. as for CARMAGEDDON, I kind of hate its gameplay.

Also, I don't think STAR WARS: DEMOLITION has been mentioned yet, but that's a legit vehicular combat title similar to Vigilante 8 (same developers).

Then there's the DESTRUCTION DERBY series. wasn't a fan. demolition derby racing is closer to the carmageddon style anyway.

an even older racer/shooter not mentioned so far is CRASH N BURN, 1993 title for Panasonic 3DO.

It's a shame neither of the two games I consider to be the most compelling vehicle combat games within the last year have been brought up here. Either one of these games honestly deserve their own thread to bring attention to them in my opinion, but I'll do a quick rundown on them here in the meantime.

Auto Age: Standoff

I easily consider this to be the best vehicle combat game since TM 2012. Even as an indie title, it has managed to really impress me and its gameplay is really mechanically solid. Driving in of itself is fun and very responsive. The aerial element is balanced well and adds a lot of depth to how you can navigate across the maps and dodge weapons. There's a ton of vehicles and a good variety of weapons and modules you can mix and match with custom loadouts. There's plenty of maps and a wide variety of modes. The combat has a surprising amount of depth to it. Overall, it's really fun.

Most importantly though, the game has a lot of heart to it. The 80's vibe doesn't feel forced, and the cell-shaded aesthetic compliments it well. It has a great soundtrack and feels like a very professional product as a whole. Even though it originally released as a full game, the game has received a lot of substantial updates expanding the number of vehicles, maps and modes since the game released. At the price of $10 it's a great value, even though it lack a substantial single-player campaign.

Unfortunately, the game has really been a victim of the over-saturated market of indie games on Steam. Being a primarily-online game, it garnered little attention at launch and died pretty quickly. Thankfully, the game does sport bots which are pretty challenging. You've basically got to arrange matches or announce that you're looking to play with others with their Discord channel in order get human competition. Still, I'd really recommend checking it out. It really is a hidden gem and is well worth supporting the devs.

This is a game that's currently in pre-alpha, but is already showing a lot of promise and has really surprised me. Yes, it's a battle royale. I am not fond of the genre at all, and I think that pretty much all of the battle royale games that have been trending for the last couple years are extremely flawed games that get a pass for their pisspoor gameplay because of how immersive they are and how effectively they channel our suppressed hunter-gatherer instincts. However, notmycar actually has the potential to not be weighed down by most of those same faults.

What surprised me the most about the game is the combat. Going into it I expected it to be very similar to Crossout (which is complete trash in my opinion) and essentially be turret-based tank combat with slightly faster vehicles which would just become a war of attrition. And honestly, the first few matches I played did feel that way. However, as I and other players improved the power of the front-mounted forward-fire weapons (ala TM), the wide range of abilities, the power ram damage and the general speed and manoeuvrability of vehicles has proven to me that there's actually a decent level of depth to it.

As a TM community we rarely, if ever play online free-for-all last man standing since it's the dullest and easiest mode to exploit, which is ironically what the series' single player is entirely based on. Even in early form, NMC plays like FFA LMS vehicle combat done right. The game has the potential to be very fast-paced, resource gathering is crucial and unlike other battle royale games, the combat is almost entirely close-quarters. In fact, the long-range sniper in the first match in the linked video isn't even in the game anymore as far as I can tell. I recommend checking out the pre-alpha and following the game as it progresses in development.

Auto age stand off looks pretty good. In all my research I haven't come across that one. Good show Muddeh.

I've seen notmycar, but all I found was a page for pre-alpha sign up so I didn't bother to post it up. Good though you've actually played it and can give a opinion on it. I was interested even if battle royals are not my thing

Later today I'm going to to a full post dedicated to Road Wars and how to get it to run on modern systems. After playing a bit last night, I really enjoyed the game.

Robocraft Royale

New battle royale game based on the moderately-successful free to play game Robocraft. Apparently it has really bad optimization issues on top of being dead on arrival. It's still in Early Access, but the concurrent player count already dipped into the single digits in less than twelve hours and it's in pretty big trouble.

Thanks for the extremely unproductive post there Thumpy.

I think I've finally found everything I could. If there is another one out there it would be interesting to see.

On a side note there is a TON of car combat board games I decided not to add all of them here, but if your curious you can find them pretty easily.

There's quite a few other vehicle combat games on Steam that haven't been mentioned here yet. Some of them are shoddy garbage/asset flips though (NitroRage, for example) that aren't even really worth mentioning. There's quite a few vehicle combat modes within other games, like the battle mode in the recent Micro Machines: World Series game. There's also a lot of earnest efforts such as Nightwolf: Survive the Megadome, Grass Max, and Cars with Guns: It's About Time that go almost completely unnoticed, mainly because it's so difficult to get exposure on Steam. The fact that so many obscure games have been listed here but games like these haven't even been mentioned is a testament to poor the Steam platform has become for budding devs, especially for those developing games in a niche genre like vehicle combat.
