Setup for TMBO Server Guide for PS2/3

Necessary to play on the custom server:
[list bull-blackball]
  • Playstation 2 or Playstation 3 console with backwards compatibility
  • Memory Card
  • Controller
  • Twisted Metal Black Online Disc
  • Another PS2 game with a network setup utility built-in. A List of games with the built in network profile creation tool can be found here
Special Note, Please read: Forwarding of ports 10070 and 10075 (UDP/TCP) to your PS2/PS3 LAN IP address (from within your router) is strongly recommended! If ports are not forwarded, there may be problems joining or hosting game rooms!

    Step 1

Could you provide more details about your setup?
    Router brand and model
Did you DMZ or forward the ports (10070/10075) to your PS2?

At which point does TMBO throw an error?

Connecting directly to my Airport router from my BC PS3 through wifi worked well. I had to go into my Airport utility and under the network tab set up the UDP TCP port forwarding. I was able to start a game. Though unable to join any.

I was unable to figure out how to get it working running an ethernet cable into my Mac and then connecting to the Wifi. I will try that again later.

The host of the room probably didn't have their PS2/3 DMZd or ports forwarded.
The room you tried to join, was it called "Paint It Black"? I ask because the host of that room never really has any problems with people joining his games.

I'll leave a room open for testing purposes, "Test Room".

Cool. I can join the games waiting room. But when I hit play game it won't advance past the the waiting for host... / loading screen. I can still hit triangle to go back to the waiting room though.

*EDIT* Ahhhhhh I see, it's a synchronous game, so that maybe explains it. Still. I also see DARKFORCE listed as in the game. So in theory, this is working.

Note for people playing on the BETA SERVER:

If you are quitting the game for the day, please use the exit game option from the start menu, then back out to the main menu of TMBO BEFORE turning off your console (Where it says Internet/LAN/Options). If you turn off your console in the server lobby or in-game it can potentially crash the server sometime later on.

Hey Roadie, does this guide also pertain to a fat ps3 user setting up with a ps2 online start up disc 4.0? This is the situation I have & really hope the process is just as easy under these conditions.

My router is verizon and it looks like this:

I get an error when I go to Internet and it's trying to connect but fails. I did port forwarded but can't test if I did it right. http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee91/Luis2_06/Port%20Forwarding_zpshkcvdwyj.jpg It's at the bottom in green.

The port forwarding looks correct from what I'm able to see.
If you open up command ("cmd" in the windows search box) and type in "nslookup tmblack2002-prod.pdonline.scea.com 173.198.252.240" does it match mine?

I know you were able to connect once before, but never again.
There is another player with this same issue, but he was able to connect to the server a few times before it decided never to connect ever again. Hopefully this issue is not ISP related.

The problem may be your ISP from the looks of it.

Using alternate DNS server instructions: http://www.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/fiosinternet/troubleshooting/network/questionsone/99144.htm#

Try using any of these DNS servers in your router settings

8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. These are Google Public DNS Servers.
You can otherwise use OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

Make sure you note down your original DNS addresses, because you may need them if this doesn't work (still can't connect to tmbo server).

If nothing else works and things seem completely hopeless, you might want to give the following cheat device codes a try...

FYI the codes below are raw/unencrypted and designed for the NTSC-U version of TMBO. Use something like Omniconvert to encrypt them for AR MAX.

    Mastercode
    902A38B0 0C0A8DD4

    TMBO Revival Server (173.198.252.240)
    204E7638 2E333731
    204E763C 2E383931
    204E7640 2E323532
    204E7644 00303432
    204E7648 00000000
    204E764C 00000000
    204E7650 00000000
    204E7654 00000000
    204E7658 00000000
    20316AEC 2E333731
    20316AF0 2E383931
    20316AF4 2E323532
    20316AF8 00303432
    20316AFC 00000000
    20316B00 00000000
    20316B04 00000000
    20316B08 00000000
    20316B0C 00000000

The aforementioned codes programmatically change the server TMBO tries to log into. By using them, there's no need to deal with adjusting DNS settings. Just make sure you clear your custom DNS setting from step 7 of RoaDiE's guide before trying to log into TMBO.

The downside of using a cheat device for this is that you'll have to deal with the hassle of starting up the cheat device before playing TMBO every time. The DNS method is a lot more user-friendly because you only have to set it up once, and then everything is saved so you don't need to do anything special afterwards.

Lastly, regarding port forwarding, that has no bearing on whether or not you can connect to the revival server. Players with blocked ports will always be able to login, but will be greeted by a warning message as their lobby announcement.

Once you sort out your DNS problems and manage to login successfully, I suspect you're going to end up seeing the warning message in the lobby. The message will mention your router's LAN IP address (192.168.1.1) as well as your PS2's LAN IP address (192.168.1.x). Upon seeing the warning, note down your PS2's LAN IP. Then, login to your router, go to its port forwarding settings and replace "173.198.252.240" with your PS2's LAN IP at the bottom.

    Good luck :)!

I'm gonna try the action replay code. I'm not familiar with dealing with the DNS stuff.

Wait I just remembered I have to use Omniconvert for that code and it's big. It might take a while to find one that works in Omniconvert.

Edit: I can go online now. :o By the way is the PS3 able to connect to TMB Online wirelessly? Mines is not backwards compatible and will be using my PS2 for it. I'm just asking for those who has sold their PS2 for a PS3. A lot of PS3 users use wireless and not the Ethernet cable, even though Ethernet cables are better.

Edit2: Oops I just noticed that there's a room that I made that is stuck on the list and won't go away when I refresh. Forgot to log off before turning off the PS2. How do you get rid of it?

A few of us (in the past...through xlink kai) have played TMBO through a wireless connection on a BC Phat PS3 and it worked fine. It was through LAN mode, but I think online mode should work as well.

There is nothing you can do about a hollow room that's in the lobby list. The best prevention is to completely log off the TMBO server then turn off your PS2.

No worries, I got rid of the hollow room for ya.

I think the main issue here is that it's generally not a good practice to shutdown a console while connected to a server in an online game. Especially inside a game room, particularly if you're the host :D lol. It's nothing to worry about. I think several other players have run into the same issue.

With the way the revival server currently works, if you shutdown your PS2 while hosting a game room, a "hollow" entry for your game room and yourself in its player list will persist in the lobby. This is because your player session and game room are still considered to be "open" in the server's database.

If you turn your PS2 back on and login afterwards, a check is performed to ensure you don't already have an open session. If it detects an old session for you that's still open, it'll close out the old session and remove you from any game rooms you were previously showing up as being inside. It doesn't currently close down game rooms you were hosting, though. The end result are those rooms you formely hosted that show up with 0/8 players in them. When the server restarts at 4:30 AM PST every night, those "hollow" rooms should get closed down automatically.

Anyway, if you close your game rooms properly, by leaving them, they'll stop appearing in the lobby. Host migration also works. So if multiple players are in a room and the host leaves (by quitting the room - not by shutting down their PS2 inside the room), hosting duties will migrate to another player.

I'm starting to look into a means of detecting suddenly lost player connections on the server-side and updating player/room listings accordingly. If it pans out, it should resolve all these hollow player/room problems and improve the accuracy of the website prototype discussed in another thread :).

Welcome to TMA. That's some fine work to put up an instruction video, and then proceed to play the game with one many TMBO's best veterans. Good to see you're enjoying the game.

Also another thanks shouting out TMA as a site as well. We have grown a little smaller but, overlooking how things were it should be fine to get some more eyes in here.

Who knows. More interest would mean it might make Sony reconsider.

    And I woke up.....

Thank you for this preservationist effort! I'm going to be hosting a PlayStation 2 meetup and I want to offer Twisted Metal Black Online as an option for people.

Are the servers still online? Last night I tried following the exact steps to setup the network utility creation function using Midnight Club 3: DUB Remix. It timed out. And a few nights ago I had first tried the original Network Adapter Disc with the manual settings and using my public IP address and I couldn't get that to work either. Is there anything else I can try?

    Hello,

Yes, it is still working, but your ISP may not like the custom DNS we use.
You may need to add the TMBO server DNS to your router or try the cheat codes listed in this thread http://temp.tmalliance.com/?num=1476242752

Thank you for this preservationist effort! I'm going to be hosting a PlayStation 2 meetup and I want to offer Twisted Metal Black Online as an option for people.

    Thanks :)!

Are the servers still online? Last night I tried following the exact steps to setup the network utility creation function using Midnight Club 3: DUB Remix. It timed out.

I was able to login to it properly for a few minutes last night.

The revival server is online at virtually all times. It automatically restarts every day at 4:30 AM PST, but that likely doesn't take anymore than 1-2 minutes and it's highly unlikely anyone would be connected to it at that time. The server seldom gets taken down for extended periods of maintenance.

And a few nights ago I had first tried the original Network Adapter Disc with the manual settings and using my public IP address and I couldn't get that to work either. Is there anything else I can try?

By "public IP address", do you mean your WAN IP? AFAIK there are no advanced settings in any PS2 network configuration utilities that require manual entry of your WAN IP. If you typed it in somewhere when filling out your settings, you've probably made a mistake.

    Hello,

Yes, it is still working, but your ISP may not like the custom DNS we use.
You may need to add the TMBO server DNS to your router or try the cheat codes listed in this thread http://temp.tmalliance.com/?num=1476242752

Most of the suggestions in the thread you linked are tailored towards PCSX2 troubleshooting and won't apply to anyone using a real PS2.

I'd say only the following things discussed in that thread could potentially help VideogameScrapbook (or anyone else running into setup problems using a physical PS2/PS3 console):
    • Enabling DMZ on the PS2's LAN IP in his router's settings.
    • Router DNS adjustments or cheat device codes (as you mentioned).

@VideogameScrapbook If you end up using PS2 cheat device codes, I'd recommend using the ones I posted in reply #12 from this thread. That post includes a mastercode (which most PS2 cheat devices require).

Keep in mind that if you use those cheat codes, you won't need to set your primary DNS to 173.198.252.240 in any router/PS2 network settings. You'll probably want to stick with a PS2 network configuration that uses automatic (DHCP) settings.

So I finally got around to trying again and I got in successfully. I didn't have to do a DMZ or anything else, it just worked for me this time (I might have messed up a step in the directions). Currently there are no other players logged in.

Are there times where there a decent number of players online at the same time? I'm going to host the PS2 meetup on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM CT. We have a lot of games we're going to play a bit during that time, so I can't guarantee if you logged on during that time that you'd see our group, but maybe others that are watching this thread would also join.

Thanks for the help, and regardless if I do ever get to play the game online with others, it was enjoyable to at least see the server message! :)

Hello guys, I want to ask if this video is completely right in the process of setting up to play TMB online:

If that's the case, someone knows wich other game has an easy way to set up as GT4? If I'm succesful I could play basically every saturday. Thanks in advance.

I'll join for a few games Tuesday myself as long as my other obligations are taken care of and there's room.
