This was a fun and addictive game, back then. Don't let the fact that the game looks like it was aimed at a younger audience and you use little toy cars, stop you from giving the game a chance. It did had it's downsides though. I didn't like Warthog being a small car and the required distances to hit. I can imagine cars like Minion and Manslaughter, being in this game looking like this:
Although, the back of that dump truck will need to be changed and make it deeper to hold the special. I think the special should be bombs, because when you rear fire Manslaughter's special, the rocks eventually explodes. Make the bombs cause explosion, when they stay there for too long. |

Manslaughter could have launched a ton of roman candles held in the back as a special.
Small Brawl was my first and will always be my favorite Twisted Metal ever made. |

What about Minion? Maybe a homing nuke missile? I have the Gameshark code to play as the boss version of Piecemeal, but he sucks. It's hard to move around with him in any stage that is not Now Slaying. The boss Trapper in the other hand, moves just fine.
Did you know if you fire your special while using turbos, it will travel faster? |

I always loved Small Brawl. Still my favorite Twisted Metal. the only thing that really bugged me about that game was that all of the locked characters had so little story lines, and that we never really saw the drivers.(I would LOVE to see a young Mr. Ash) the vehicle Manslaughter likely wasn't used due to the name. A little too dark for SB.. Even though the idea of an RC dump truck is so damn perfect. how could a Dump Truck that drops cherry bombs from the back/launch them forward for the Alt, special be rejected??

There's a picture of a young Mr. Ash in the wiki:
Axel was going to have an ending but they removed it, because they thought his ending was too offensive for handicap people. The driver was someone on a wheelchair that wished to walk again. Calypso gave him remote control legs with him controlling it. I don't know why secret characters usually have no endings. Probably laziness? |
Title: Re: Twisted Metal Small Brawl Post by Mr.SLaM on 11/24/13 at 14:48:34
That was one cool thing about Black and Head-on, all of the characters had endings. Except Minion I think.
I want a remake of this so badly, even as a PSN game for like 15 bucks would be enough to make a good basic TM. I want to make it clear that I really don't want an overhead view like they did with Motorstorm RC, it ruined the experience for me, I want the camera right behind the vehicle. I think for them to really pull another Small Brawl off it needs to... -original tournament style with no bullshit objectives -keep cartoon style -Bring back all characters regardless of name (or change them) -keep it at a T rating -add complexity and interaction to levels, but keep the same scale -have different level options for tournament mode like TM Black and Head-on -multiplayer and multiplayer co-op (obviously) -mid tournament cut scene? -vehicle skins? |

Small Brawl is awesome, I still remember how excited I was when I first heard about it.
It wasn't available by any means on PS1 in my country, so first time i played it was in 2010 on my PSP Loved almost everything about it except a few small things -but very important to me- which are Axel's special, and Roadkill not being in the game. I won't go through my opinions on a remake but I will give an opinion in one thing. Tournament having objectives can make it better. I'm not saying objectives like TMX. More like objectives which will make sense due to the fact that the game's vehicles are toy cars. I love the good old tournament-only style of TM. But I loved more the objectives in TMX. One thing for sure, Roadkill must make it if a remake was to ever be made, and Axel's special should be the shockwave once more. Mr.Ash's pic is great. It makes sense you know, since many theories says that he's a devil. Minion should be like his younger brother, since Mr.Ash gave Minion his powers. |

Luis, you might find the previous discussions interesting to breathe new life into the game. I joined a long time ago just for putting up my notes but I think no one goes back to glean for info. Hopefully, this will make the game funner for everyone if they're willing to do some reading.

Whoops, nevermind, guess you were there after I had left. I was showing a fellow gamer my enthusiasm for the early tm series so I have been returning to the game with a different perspective.
This time around I will be testing the homing and range capabilities of weapons. So far in my findings fire and homing missiles travel the same distance but power missiles travel slightly further. As it's commonly known, weapons travel further if you add momentum like a dash of turbo. Same with jumps. It'll be interesting to see what differences there are and a new way to look at Warthog's special which was my original intent. If anyone else has some cool tidbits to offer let's figure it out. Peace. |

I honestly think the game would be better off without multiplayer and vehicle skins. Vehicle Skins because that's something that isn't worth the time or money to implement, considering the fact that the designs of all the cars in Small Brawl are great. They have a distinct style to them, and I think keeping it original would add to the concept of Small Brawl itself, and keep it as an outlier from the rest of the series. Being able to take something that invokes a child-like mindset and throw a new skin that could potentially ruin it's innocence doesn't seem to fit. As far as multiplayer, I don't like the direction the upcoming generations are heading. Believe me, I love being able to go online and play with my friends, but it stops us from playing together in person. Back in the PS1 days, when we wanted to play video games together, we had to sit in from of a TV in person and play on a Split Screen on a tiny TV. Technology has advanced so much since then, that people have forgot about the classic days. In modern soceity, why go over to play split screen when we can stay at home and play together from there? If they have online multiplayer, I think it should only be Co-op. But as far as TDM, etc; I think it should stay on the local split-screen. Even support Local play by being connected to the same wireless signal, or through ethernet cables, so that way everyone can have their own TV's, but a small title like this can invoke feelings of nostalgia and be a small step in reminding people that we do love how we used to play, cause it made real friendships stronger, without being a triple A title that would never dream of making a move like this. |
Title: Re: Twisted Metal Small Brawl Post by Luis on 12/23/13 at 22:14:49
Why TDM on local only? That's the best mode. Technology right now is too advanced to only allow TDM on locals and no doubt people are going to complain if it's not online.

Title: Re: Twisted Metal Small Brawl Post by Ripzsaur on 12/23/13 at 22:43:44
That's part of my point. People might complain, but multiplayer games were about bringing people together in the first place. Playing online is not the same as playing Locally. It doesn't create memories the same, and I think TM was one of the best at encouraging Split Screen back in the day, and it would be nice to see it move back to it's roots, regardless of if it strays away from video game norms of today.

I don't wanna be forced to go out and walk to people's houses, when I can just use wifi, which makes it faster to find a match. I don't even know anyone else besides my brother who plays Twisted Metal, from where I live and I'm not about to go out and meet people. The only people who would want online to be so limited and wants people to be together on the same couch, are the ones who are stuck in the past. The reason why TM only had split-screen back then, (Besides TM2 PC) is because the PS1 didn't had online. A Twisted Metal game without online will not sell in this day and age. Get with the time.

Damn right Luis. Who the hell out of my friends want to go to my house and play split-screen. Hell even if they did, I'd still sort of want an entire screen to view my game on.
People don't even want to get off their ass to change the game disc let alone walk somewhere. |
Title: Re: Twisted Metal Small Brawl Post by Kratoscar2008 on 03/12/17 at 20:07:23
Small Brawl is pretty good.
I really dig the idea of RC cars TM and i would love a more modern take on it. If TM wasnt Sony i could had seen a TM SB on Wii given the target audience it would had made it a reality far easier. Would be neat if it got one but with TM Black characters. Maybe have Bloody Mary find a proper boyfriend so she doesnt go bonkers. |
Title: Re: Twisted Metal Small Brawl Post by Big Boss on 03/15/17 at 22:18:23
It was a cute little game with an awesome soundtrack. What can I say? I like that it's different, but kind of does a decent job retaining the classic Twisted Metal feel.

I beg to differ. Felt a little floaty in the physics department, which made since to a degree considerimg they were RC cars.
Also easy as hell. |
