Title: Social Networking Sites, how do you feel?
Post by YellowJacket318 on 02/18/10 at 03:18:29
Anyone on any of these?  I'm on Facebook.  Just wondering who was on there, may be easier to talk back and forth rather than on a forum all the time.  I know some people think they're lame, but I think they're a good way to keep in touch with friends I don't see too often... what does piss me off though is when people friend other people just to get their friend count up... who the fuck cares how many friends you have, it don't mean shit if you don't talk to all of them.

Here's my page.  Send a message with a friend request so I know you're from here.

Hmm...alright I guess I'll be the odd man out and link my account:

http://www.facebook.com/index.php?#!/profile.php?id=1105235335

I use Facebook since I moved away from California. It's become the easiest way to get a hold of my folks and friends from high school. I really only check it once a day, and I never use any apps, so i supposes it's just a really flashy address book.

I've always said social networking sites give people a false sense of self-importance. Nobody cares what you did last night, people only look at your pictures to make fun of you and it's all a friend adding frenzy.

Even though I have Facebook and a MySpace for my music, that's as far as I go.

I DID have a myspace and Facebook account but I never log into it and forgot the logins/passwords.
Only reason i signed up for those in the first place is because Angelique talked me into it lol. She was very convincing lol

I really hate those sites though. Especially Twitter. I hate that one the most.

I don't have accounts to any of the social networking sites. Simply put, I'm boring and I don't think anyone cares what I have to say. Shit, I barely care about what's going on in my life why should anyone else?

It's also why my post count stays relatively small here... Talk when you have something to say. Updates every 15 minutes is just plain stupid and egotistical.

If you need to talk to anyone here outside of posting on the forums, most of us use AIM to communicate with each other.

I created a myspace back in 2005 so that I could keep in contact with a cousin that went overseas a lot.  Since then I have had about five myspace accounts ... this last one I have had for well over a year so woot woot!  I find it extremely useful especially when I am working a graveyard shift ... otherwise my friends bug me via text messages and that inbox fills up pretty fast damn it LoL!  The best thing that happened because of myspace is finding my childhood friend. :-)

if you all want to add me go ahead. Have a few of you on there already I think.

I use them about twice a day. Before going into work/school and when I get home. Its not too bad, like seeing whats going on with my cousins and hs friends. Bad side of it you see people bitching on there a lot instead of actually talking to the people that they have problems with. I dont use AIM anymore.. very rarely and I just recently got a phone. And I obviously dont like online gaming too much anymore or Id be on it.

Only site I use that comes close is Deviant Art which is an art site and I rarely post art on my account, heh. I also recently signed up on Fur Affinity but I haven't done anything with my account, at least not yet.

Quite a few people, some from TMA, have invited me to Facebook but I doubt I'll ever join it.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with social networking sites; it's a great way to keep in touch with friends online. I'm just not good at making a lot of friends who care to check up on me. Now, there are those who practically have internet lives on those places and treat it like they don't even live in the real world. People like that obviously have no lives of their own.

pretty much what Sam said, and thats why I dont use those sites as often as I used to. I started getting tired of seeing ppl post up a new status update every hr, on the hr... I dont give a flying fuck about how your job sucks, when it sucked an hr ago and you were bitching about it then. and how can your job suck if you have the time and capability to get on you FB account and bitch about the very job you're neglecting?

Got a myspace. Hardly use it. It was fun at 1st but that died away.

I also have a Facebook too. I've run into alot of people I used to know. I think it's a little cooler to use, but I'm starting to wind down finding anyone else. I use it occasionaly. More than Myspace.

I haven't been on AIM in......

I have a myspace, once that dies, i'll be done with this I think. I may be more solitary for it, but the people that rely on these sites for socializing, I think, are some of the most disappointingly vapid people I've met.

Anyway, here's the link, I mostly use it for bands so I can keep my judging a book column on my site alive

even tho 99% of the bands on there suck anyway

Digging up the grave here, don't mind me. It seems to be the trend these days. Speaking of trends, we might as well speak of a modern day outlook on social networking sites.

So, it's the same as before only that it's worse but it's to be expected since anyone has access to the internet.  Still dominated by hyping, marketing, attention-seeking nonsense that's usually questionable but gets shared and then is expected to be believed upon at first site. This is what drives today's society. You can even see it on news articles. Look at how 'journalism' in this era uses tweets/posts from some random schmuck and treats it at face value. Weren't the usage of GIF's for news articles unprofessional?

I mean, I've had social media before (MySpace) but that was ages ago. Tried Facebook shortly after MySpace died but never got along with it. Now you have Instagram and similar apps, but it's mainly pictures so it's more simplified I suppose. Personally, I think simplicity is better for social media today. Then you have sub-boards, which I've always been fond of along with sites like YouTube.

It's just silly. Sometimes people ask me if I have social media accounts, tell 'em no, then proceed to ask me why I don't have anything. The reactions are usually puzzling for them or think I'm some strange person but it wasn't strange 15 years ago now was it? How that's considered to be strange these days is baffling to me. We're all expected to have something or what?

I never understood it. Seems like its a thing more for the younger folk/ females.

I'm not much into gossip or sharing every little thing I do with the world. The only use I see for social media for myself would be from a business stand point. All else I don't get too much.

Hell the only reason I have a facebook I barely use was because a EX of mine made it.

I haven't logged into Myspace for over a decade. I wonder if I still can. I had it kinda as a joke with the guys from a former employer to just bullshit in. Just like TMA. TMA is way better of course. Even slow as it is.

I have a Facebook and that's about it. Fuck all the rest of that shit. I barely even do or say shit on FB because of how stupid that can be sometimes. I'd love to treat it as TMA but, We all know that shit gets shut down kinda fast.

It's interesting you point this question out. I know what you mean about it, and I believe it's just because you and me are just in the age group where we can live without it. My kids have a difficult time leaving their electronics behind. When we lost our power for a few days they were board out their minds. These apps and sites are just a part of the society that needs it, and there is a consumer demand for them. It will likely get worse TBH.

And fuck using anything like that shit for legit news. Also who the fuck cares what a Cardashian had for lunch?

I use Facebook, Twitter and Telegram. I registered on SteemIt but never got started with it.

Out of those, I mainly use Facebook to keep up with my childhood friends, co-workers, family and online friends (TMA/Team Fortress Classic). My ex shoved me into it about 9 years ago...once I cut ties with her and her douchebag friends, Facebook got cooler to me in certain ways. I enjoy the memes, mainly...and I do enjoy trolling people on there (just like the ancient TMA days, 2000-2002 era).

I mainly use Twitter to follow John McAfee and check up on cryptocurrency projects I have money invested in. Same with Telegram. Just to chat with team members connected to crypto.

I'll admit I miss MySpace a little bit. But for the love of God, the fucking load times were unreal. Almost every female on my friends list at that time had "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield as their profile song...it was the original pumpkin spice latte.

...I don't know if anyone remembers Live Journal. I check on my old one once a year and slouch down in my chair in embarrassment.  ;D

I have a Reddit account for various hobby subreddits, but that's it. No facebook, twitter, instant graham cracker, snapcat.

It's important not to worry about what other people think of you all the time.

(And it's kind of awkward to be on the internet without anonymity for non-professional reasons. The best thing about the internet is that you're anonymous. Why ruin that for yourself?)

To me, DeviantArt is hell on the internet.

I got abused and cyber-attacked by fans of... Ratchet & Clank.
Dang, I can't even stand typing the name, or saying it...  It's torture.  Those girls were like... evil, discriminating me for my beliefs.  They eventually forced me to leave DA, even though they had no rights.

And then there's Twitter.  Everyone there only talks to people they add as friends and won't give a frick about what you say, even if it's a compliment.  Eventually I got attacked, and that was the end of THAT as well.

To them I say...
