It's not as popular with YOU maybe because you were probably 5 years old when the first game came out.
If you ask people who dont play video games what Twisted Metal is of course they wont know.
If you ask people 25-35 what the best car combat game of all time is, chances are they will know.

I agree though, it's not as popular as F Fantasy or rpgs cause mostly LAMOS play those games and there's more of those then Dudes who Like cars and blowing shit up...

I couldn't stop thinking about a Twisted Metal Movie when I was watching the latest Death Race movie with Jason Statham, Tyrese and Joan Allen... made me think about the assylum in black (Prison in DR), and Calypso granting wished (Joan Allen granting freedom) as well as the inclusion of weapons and defenses... just add racing to Twisted Metal.  

The movie was made by Paul W.S. Anderson who also made all the Resident Evil movies so it wouldn't surprise me if he used Twisted Metal as a basis for the Death Race movie.

Oh, I greatly enjoyed it. I remember seeing the preview in the movie theaters and I about lept out of my seat screaming "TWISTED METAL!!" The cars are exactly as I'd imagine them looking. The color editing, action sequences, everything. One of the only things I didn't really like, althought I think it had a clever way about it, was how they activated their weapons. Reminded me too much of old school Super Mario Kart.

They represent the broad spectrum of human beings.

Death race was just a bunch of a-holes driving cars that weren't even their own...
and shooting guns and missles.
It was nothing like Twisted Metal.

Twisted Metal was always so much more than that, even though that's all the games are essentially are run and gun driving and blowing stuff up, each character was different and each vehicle had its pro's and con's.
But the best thing is each characters story and how they relate to everyone else in some way or another.

if this new one just hits the right spot then I'm sure it'll re-ignite the genre.

It'll be interesting to see how level upgrades are implemented since this is a sure fire way to keep ppl playing I'd say.

i agree,its not that car combat as a genre is no longer a plausible idea,its the fact that no serious game in the genre has come out since TMB,even then there werent many serious games for the genre,more companies need to get with it,the more competition there is out there the bigger and better these games will get

The fact that people would be like "Who is that, and why is that..." etc.
is what will make them curious.

When you go see a movie, aren't you annoyed to death with long credits?
Personally, I love just jumpin right into the Film from the get go.
When characters are Vague, they are mysterious and when the main character (with whom you sympathize with) doesn't know what is going on with the characters around him, then you as an audience member are More "Part of" the movie on a more interactive basis, so to speak.
You learn plot elements and so on when the character learns them...

This, is in fact one of the main problems with movies today.
They explain too much and fail to take you on a "ride".
Same with previews.
They simply fail to maintain any amount of mystery which makes me not interested in exploring the Film any further.
Then, they are filled with characters Nobody can relate to, which makes me nor give a rats ass about them...
