yeeep. online features.

stat tracking is key. id like to know what damage dealt/received is like. Specific to each car. Most commonly used car/level/weapon. Time spent in game, etc.

and the ability to record videos would be tiiiight

EDIT: Bleh to those who voted for offline splitscreen. yay lets have 1on1 games against each other on the same tv as opposed to fighting a dozen online at same time! /sarcasm

I would think that would be the bare minimum.  Warhawk, which is the engine TM uses, already has everything mentioned in this post and that came out years ago.

YouTube support should be simple too, because even 5 dollar PSN games have it nowadays.  Jaffe is definitely leaning toward a XP/reward system, not just customizable crap.

Voted for the first one but I was surprised that the results are 50/50 at this point. Lame. I honestly don't see how the second choice is even comparable.

And I never even thought of the youtube support possibility for the new TM. Oooooo. That is a must!

I'm wondering if this has any weight on whether either of these features will be in the new game over the other. I like co-op as much as the next guy but if it means losing stat tracking then fucking leave it.

For fucks sake, stop limiting it to one player, its fucking boring with friends over.

I'm sure there would be both, but it would just be ffa split screen and teams like tmb had.. if its going to have story mode than its going to have offline multiplayer... i just dont want jaffe to spend time making a 4 player capture the flag or fox hunt offline

I'm pretty sure that TMPS3 will have seamless joining of multiple people in online games.  Warhawk did 4 players flawlessly in 2006, so I'm thinking TMPS3 can do 2 players in 2010 at least.  I'm thinking he is talking more about co-op campaigns and such.  Who knows though really.

I'm thinking online stats and ranking with say 4 player split vs 4 player split wouldn't work right?

Is it warhaw wheer you can't have a ranked game using split screen mode online??

I might be wrong, I'm a numpty if I am.

Yeah I'd like to see online modes with split screen combined.

4 player co-op campaign maybe???? (2 player split & 2 player split online).

I'm rambling worse than jaffe now...

Must be the excitement.

That was exactly my reasoning too.. Stat tracking sounds awesome. I'm guessing the leveling up is like halo and gears - the better you are the higher your ranked.  Anywho, Im thinking the more stats this game covers the better - especially when Blasting Crap, Default, or Hatemachine decide to show up again and claim that they housed you. You can whip out that score sheet and see for yourself that that's not the case.  And I think stats is a way to improve your game play if the game shows a breakdown of percentages off weapons that you landed or cars that you use or don't use, total damage done to total damage received ratio and ofcourse kills to death ratios

The proof will finally be in the pudding

I agree with DSB, I kinda have a boyfriend I'd like to play Twisted Metal with @_@ (Duh). My most heated games are between he and I, most fun too. If I couldn't play with him, I'd have no interest in really playing it too much at all...unless it has a story, then that would suck me in.

Online is fine, but how much do you really think Statistics are going to hold a community together, I honestly don't give a shit how many times i've been napalmed. Just give me a way to control a bunch of factors so we can build custom games. I'd really hate to see this experience level bullshit get added to it as well.

I don't give a damn about Statistics, nor will I ever compare my stats to other players.  The reason I voted that is because I want a leveling system, which is what is going to take hundreds of man hours of programming to do.  Stat tracking can be programmed by one person, the leveling system is what he is mainly referring to.  Warhawk already has stats so the code is already implemented, they just have to change weapon names and designs, which are probably mostly finished by now.

I just think having co-op offline does NOTHING to evolving Twisted Metal.  Online co-op was available in 1995.  Let's think 15 years later and modernize it.  So old school fans and a new breed of people that NEVER played TM before can enjoy it.  And the leveling system is one way that will make people keep playing even after they have finished the stories.  The people playing co-op will be playing offline anyway, not really helping the game's future at all, only benefiting the two/four players playing locally.

Warhawk sucks with 4 player split screen offline.  I mean it doesn't suck...but it's like finding 10 dollars when playing online is like finding 100.  It's like diet soda.  It's like playing one on one on an NFL sized field.  TM will always be fun, but waaay more fun with online craziness.

WarHawk had online split screen, and it was one of the very few games to do so. I seriously fucking hope this game implements it too. Split screen is going the way of the dodo, and that sucks. MP should take precedent of course, but I like to be able to play split screen when my friends drop by god damnit.

Now, if the question was online MP vs offline MP it'd be a no brainer - online obviously. But the existence of split screen versus superfluous dick-measuring stat crap? that's also a no brainer IMO, the other way.

Now, the leveling up thing is interesting. If we're talking about the kind of leveling up where you just change the icon and number by your name and what not like you see in a lot of games, well then who gives a shit. But if we're talking about the CoD kind of thing, unlocking new perks and weapons and stuff, well that's entirely different. Is it the direction TM should head? I don't know (and it looks like we're pretty split on that from the post here: http://thefoodmonster.com/cgi-bin/tma/YaBB.pl?num=1262024858 ). We know so little about how the game will shake out it's really hard to know if it's appropriate. If it's like TM of old, where there's X vehicles and X weapons, I think the progressive unlocking thing would probably screw things up. But who's to say whether they are going to stick with this formula? If, as the poll suggests, they already has fun online MP, well I would think that this would have to have been decided already as something like that is really fundamental to the online experience and would require a huge amount of time and thought to put together.

so many replies, so many points to argue and agree with...where to start where to start where to start....eeny..meeny..miny....kilrgrn - that's shocking to hear coming from a chick that has a lot to back up when the new game comes out.  If I recall correctly weren't you bragging that you were undefeated in TMHO online? Wasn't it fun beating up on the boys? Think it will last in the next TM? However I can relate to the offline experience - hell I still play Eakius in tm2(psx) atleast twice a week every week. Is he my greatest rival? Yes. Are our matches the most thrilling? To me they are. But I want more, constantly searching for more players - what better way than online?

"That is really, really disgusting and somehow disturbing.  No offense to Kilr/Spyda and DSB.  You know I love you all.  But the online gaming is what will keep the community together.  The storylines are just icing."

well, there's gonna be a story mode, Jaffe said so himself before he took his comments down. I can see why he took his comments down, we would have been commenting and brawling on his website about this

My guesses is that the game is 80% done.  They're probably tweaking the crap out of it right now. In an article that archminion posted, it said something about trimming the fat of their current game, which means to me is that they are done developing, done coming up with ideas, done adding major stuff to it and they are looking to cut stuff out of the game so not to go over the budget.  Maybe its down to those two options and one has to go, or maybe he is watching us to see how we fight over this and will end up keeping both.

I can bet that right now this TM has a single player a typical offline multiplayer and an online.  What I don't get is a "robust offline multiplayer"- is that an offline capture the flag, manhunt, collector, damage, net damage, carnage for 2 - 4 players? If that's the case, why add that? The overwhelming majority (not tma and tma) is just going to end up playing kills with their friends. I much rather have all those modes balanced and tweaked for online play.

The least amount of bullshit the better, no more inflated egos. everything would be in writing and players would see exactly where they stood skill wise. Isnt that what we wanted and wasn't that the reason that mort wanted to bring the ladder system for tmbo?  I was thinking thats what Jaffe meant about leveling up - skill ranking - just like in warhawk.  This would keep pro's from slaughtering casual gamers, it would allow for the casuals to practice and build skill, while at the same time not dumbing down the experience for the pros. We would still be able to play each other regardless of skill level through player hosted matches.  Hell, Vigilinate 8 had attempted to work in a match maker service.  I'm fine and dandy with unlocking new shells for cars or decals and having a big fat number next to my name.

I too think that TM should take a step forward into the mainstream. I so badly want this game to do well, it needs to have a good release and I think the online multiplayer is what will make or kill this game.  I don't want this game to die off quickly like calling all cars and V8arcade did. TM needs all the substance it can get.

I voted for online MP.. simply put, I fucking HATE split-screen. why the fuck should I cut my screen in half and share with someone else? and if they wanna know where I am, they can just look up or down.. what if I got some strategy? I dont need some satellite bullshit ruining my schemes

I am all for stat tracking and leveling up. much like MW style.. you come in at the bottom and work your way up. the shitty players will take longer while the elite will whoop ass. but of course you impliment a matchmaker to keep it fair.. like keeping first rounders from taking on a whole team on prestigers. if IW can get it right, I dont see why ESP cant. leveling up could unlock perks like Juggernaut, Super Cloaker, Permanent Turbo, ect.. it'd be like CoD or Battlefield, but in cars

I'm just thinking of something Nightshade said.

We still don't even have the actualy %100 proof that this is like the TM games of old (or even if it definitely is TM).

I think a poll like this should really have come out right after the game is announced.

Most of us know what it is but what about the average joe who doesn't visit here? Or those that don't often sniff around Jaffe's blog?

Even if you google 'TM PS3' you don't get that much more than rumours.

I would have liked to know %100 what the game is like and how it plays before I could start joining 1 arguement or the other.

E.G. I'd hate to see some sort of perk system in TM. I just think it would knock any already tricky balance to fuck.

I chose the offline split because I know there's online anyway and I do play more offline than online.

I always just play for fun. I do want to see a simple ranking structure but when ppl start taking it to seriously I lose interest.

I actually think the real purpose of this poll is to get an idea of which countries have a following...Anyone else think so?

Very proud of you guys for pulling that vote through.  I am shocked that the offline MP voted so much, honestly.  And Maartyr, I read about the storylines and I am ALMOST as excited about that as I am hearing about the online multiplayer of TM PS3.

Archminion, please just cut the crap and admit that Jaffe is working on TM PS3.  There is no denying it at this point.  Most of us have seen an early build of either Roadkill and/or Spectre in a leaked picture.  In my opinion the game was already announced considering the ETE video said [not so plain as day] "Twisted ... is ... coming ... PSTHREE". or some shit like that.  Doesn't that qualify as an announcement?  And If you bought/rented God of War Chains of Olympus in 2007 the very back of the manual said, "God of War III, PS III".  So that in itself was an announcement itself, just like TM.

Also, about the perk system.  I wouldn't mind if the perks were tiny like your freeze or invisibility lasts 2-3 seconds longer.  Your expenditure for a certain AA button is 50%.  This is essentially the same thing as RELICS but on a more permanent basis.  I could see a lot of balancing issues coming from that, but as long as there aren't perks like "Damage Doubled for X Weapon" then it should/could be a level playing field.  Perhaps there will be option if you are host to turn OFF perks and make level 1s vs level 50s an even match (with no benefit other than number).

I would not like to see deathly perks if they are going the perk route.  I wouldn't mind new car skins, maybe classic TM1/2 skins thrown in there.  If they copied Warhawk and made new car parts available per level I would be happy.  No matter what level you are in Warhawk it is a level playing field as far as vehicles and weapons are concerned.  The only difference between players is level familiarity and skill.  And I HOPE that Twisted Metal achieves this.  I don't want overpowered and unbalanced gameplay.  I enjoy the fact that all TM cars have their own balanced (or close to balanced) stats with Speed/Armor/Special Damage, etc. and I really don't want Jaffe and co to break the mold in TM, so to speak...but I am 100% for Twisted Metal being modernized and getting a new surge in fanbase, whether that being with perks, a leveling system, or even getting OUT OF CAR for a second (ala Warhawk).  Whatever Jaffe has planned for us I'm sure is a step in the right direction.

And yes, I think the offline MP thing he was referring to was just that.  He probably wanted to know if he should spent the next few weeks programming LMS/Manhunt and other variety matches to offline split screen MP gaming.  Or maybe even add bots and play offline splitscreen just like you would play online.

And for anyone who doesn't understand SEAMLESS multiplayer, picture me playing TMPS3 in a Junkyard level with 14/16 players full.  A buddy of mine walks in my house and says, "Fuck Yeah, I love this level, wheres the bowl and a controller?"  And I'm like, "Here dude, press START".  As soon as he presses Start, he picks a color, joins my team, and we start fucking people over.  That is seamless, and that was in Warhawk (up to 4 players online) YEARS ago, so I don't see why/how they could NOT have it since they used the exact same engine.

That is why when the Warhawk engine was mentioned I was hype, because the Warhawk engine for online gaming has been nothing but superb on every standpoint, Functionality, Latency/Lag Handling, User Friendliness, and Ease of Use.  Twisted Metal PS3 won't fail.

Suck it offline MP faggots! We won so you ain't gettin' no fucking offline MP!

As much fun as all this is I think we all really need to take a step back and wait til we know more than just the fact that there is a new TM before we start dissecting every little undetermined factor. I know we are all eager to play and know more, I definitely fucking am, but we are debating points that aren't really even points yet, lol.

I am surprised however at the amount of people wanting this fucking leveling/perks system from MW2. I think its a terrible idea and quite frankly I'm tired of every game trying to do leveling and perks now. Its like when Halo and GTA3 came out and then everyone spends years after that trying to copy those games. TM doesn't need a leveling/perk system beyond maybe just having a rank beside your name based on how much you've played like in Halo or something. Its a great idea in MW2 but I just don't see how it would work in TM. Everyone needs to remove the MW2 veil, filter, or fog that's been placed over your eyes. I mean, if the game did come out and had a system like that, and it worked and was awesome, then I'll be the first to say I was wrong, but until then I think its the worst idea to come around in some time. Unlocking skins, decals, cars, levels maybe, but upgraded weapons and AA attacks? No. Besides, everyone will unlock all that shit eventually anyways so why not just have it from the start.

I don't know, this whole topic has gotten way to big, ha. I don't even know where to begin and end.

i'm sure this game will be far from fail. all the rest (meaning Jaffe's work) were stellar, and that was with far less to work with. he's proven time and time again that he knows what it takes to make these games great, and with gaming at its peak and everything he needs at his disposal, I see nothing but win

as far as online interaction, i'm split from the rest of you I guess. I wanna see leveling up include the weapons potential and output. maybe make homing capabilities more precise and accurate.. or explosive weapons carry a higher blast radius.. higher heat threshold on the machine guns for longer firing.. I know what you mean, Scold about keeping it fair, but that's what matchmaking would be for. and even in games like CoD where their matchmaking system pretty much blows, I still can run train on ppl who are far more advanced than me. on MW2, one of my most earned accolades is the one that says Most Kills of Higher Rank. leveling up isn't always about who's better, but maybe who just has more time to put into the game to level up faster.. that's the case with me on MW2. I don't have nearly  as much time in as some of my friends who have prestiged.. and a few who are about to do it again

We still don't know how much this game has changed from what we're used of.

I know that old pic looked like good old TM but that was a year ago.

If there are perks or level upgrades it needs to be way subtle.

I'm still happy with novelty perks which just make your cars look better and more personal. Something to show which level or rank your at but which don't fuck about with the gameplay in any way. Like Warhawk

Sorry guys, but I voted for the offline, just 'cuz I don't like the perks idea.  It doesn't show whether or not you're better at the game.  All it shows is you don't have a life and spend all day playing video games.  On other ones with rank and stuff, I've beeen Level 3 and killed Level 50's multiple times.

On another note, why not have both offline and online MP?  That way, everyone wins.

most of us are assuming there will be both off and online MP.

It'd be crazy not to have it that way.

I prefer offline because I think to many players take it to heart when you beat them.

Don't get me wrong I still love playing online games but I have to be in a certain mood for them.

If I can get split screen without having to dish out another 300 + 60 dollars for another PS3 and the game. I'd rather have that.

People don't have IRL friends anymore.

I'm sure you will be able to play split screen online.  Hopefully you will play it more than you played Warhawk :)  And I play one player online games all the time, even with IRL friends.  Just pass the controller when you die or after two possessions (Madden online).

All my friends hate splitscreen so much that we generally will bring TVs and 360s over to other people houses, when we LAN online, just to avoid the travesty of sharing a screen with someone else.

Yes splitscreen is nice online (offline its fine), but it does hinder one's potential to pwn.

DAVID JAFFE: "Seems someone also made a KRISTA SPARKS (from Twisted Metal 2) and BRIMSTONE (from Twisted Metal: Black!) Thanks for the Twisted Metal love ya'll! What a cool idea: Twisted Metal on PS3! SWEET!!!!"

Might want to check his blog just now.

There's another poll up as well which might be relevant.

I think a great poll would have been which cars you want to see return?
That aint likely tho since I would think all the cars are in place now?

Fuck, can anyone explain how the gears of war, mw2 or uncharted works? i honestly dont know

Edit: I meant to say, for those of you who played the other games, (gow2) (mw2) (uncharted) is it that much different than halo3?...

I voted Halo 3 and not just because its a favorite of mine, but because you generally get put in games with people about your rank or skill level. GoW2 and MW2 seem to put you against people of all kinds of different ranks. And really if you want to look to any of those games for how to do an online game right Halo 3 is the obvious choice to me and that goes beyond just online rank/leveling up/perks/whatever. I still think Halo is one of the most customizable MP games around if not the most. One could only hope the new TM would ship with some kind of map editor like Forge in Halo 3.

I didn't really play a whole lot of Uncharted 2 so I don't really know how well that one stacks up but apparently its in the lead right now by quite a bit. Probably due to all the Sony fan boys that visit his blog I would imagine.

i had origionaly voted for halo3...aside from what i read online about it and what my friends have told me, that is by far the best ranking system...however i saw  the "make the host kick players out to balance the game" so i changed my vote to uncharted2....that would totally suck if this TM didnt have a matchmaking system.  so if i had my pick it would go

1. halo3
2. uncharted
3. modern warfare2
4. gears
5...the last one isnt even an option to me

more polls jaffe!! more more more!

i voted no matchmaking, they all suffer from same flaws.

there is no perfect way to pair up "similar skilled" people. every single game on that list I own and ive seen myself paired against far higher "ranked" individuals, its INEVITABLE.

thus, I want no matchmaking, and just server list/lobby like TMBO.

OR if they must have matchmaking, just use ranked matches for it. and leave the social/unranked crowd the ability to host server lobbies and for people to browse game names, etc.

Exactly what Road said, word for word. A ranked lobby for those who are hardcore about a rank/number in thier name, and a un-ranked server where you can join and quit at will. Just like Gears of War 1.

Gears 2 suffered horribly in the begining. All of us that played 1 religiously were like OMGWTF? 1 had unranked lobbies you could join or quit at will. those were the ones I was on the most because I found the coolest players there. The ranked server always had more assholes because they cared about downs/kills stats on TEAM games. Now if you leave in 2 for any reason, (even DC) you lose ranking points. I'd really hate to see the new TM ruined by a Gears 2 style ranking system. Or any system for that matter.

Sure having a number or rank next to your tag looks good but, there are way to many assholes who have to take advantage, or cheat to make themselves look like pros. A ranking system would bring those people out. Having the choice between ranked/unranked server like Gears 1 would be awesome IMO.

I'm pretty sure that ranking shows who has skill and who doesnt...I could quit my job, become a recluse and just stay inside and play TM all day long - but if I play, suck an d constantly lose my rank will never truly rise to anything great.  In fact, if I had mad skills at TM and played it only when the day came to an end and did nothing but win - my rank and level would reflect on it.  I played halo 3 for moooonths at my friend's place and I am terrible at fps and guess what, I was stuck playing noobs and people on my level for those several months, all the while the elites probably had bigger and more fun games with other elites.  So yes matchmaking does show skill of people who are good at the game.

Xizor, I know we don't know hardly anything about this game, but Jaffe seems to be asking the fans for their input on gaming types and offline vs online stuff... If Archminion is right about the 6 month hiatus and announcement, then in theory the game should be announced in Feb.  If Jaffe is going to continue these polls or make posts on his blog about what matters the most to you, shouldn't we do our part and hold more dicussions on what we want/hope for/like/dislike/love and hate?

Who cares if we disagree with each other - we always have and always will on every topic that we post, its human nature.  But it does give the rest of us and developers a wide prospective on whats good and whats bad.  I'd much rather have them know something about point of views rather than stab blindly in the dark.

Dave's latest poll asks: Does having the commenting section turned off on this blog make you less interested in visiting?

I voted yes - not the case at all, but I do miss the ability to comment on his blogs

I voted yes as well.

I think he'll probably let the comments return

I also think the hiatus can only have done the game good.

It looked pretty rough back in xmas 08.

Seeing it now as it's meant to be I guess will be the best possible hype instead of showing it many months back when it's still got placeholders, rough textures etc.

I would have assumed that the build we will see is pretty far along graphically.

I found this while trying look up the difference between the games on the poll.  I found it pretty interesting and informative.  I really didnt know so much went into the calculations of skills.  Even though this article is for xbox live I'm sure the ps3 has something similar

Well, if I knew for a fact that Jaffe came here and read our stuff--and I wish he would considering we are his biggest most loyal fans--I would definitely think discussions like this were very beneficial. But he seems to be on this one way street about interacting with his fans right now, and even before then I don't know the extent to which he ever came to TMA. Wasn't he supposed to make a post here a while back? I remember Nightshade saying he opened the doors because he was supposed to post something but he never did.

Either way, there is nothing wrong with discussing all this. I never meant to sound like we shouldn't. I just think it will be more interesting when we know actual facts.

As for matchmaking and MP, I'm honestly tired of matchmaking as the new standard in most MP games these days. Matchmaking is fine in theory, but I miss the old days of searching for games through a list. Like Mags example of Gears 2 where people do shit like steal downs and kills just to rack up points so they can rank up, that could be a huge problem in TM where kill stealing is a rampant problem in kills only games. If there was ranking and kills only games I imagine being very pissed when I get someone in red and then some asshole comes along and steals my kill so he can get points to win. This was the worst part about V8 Arcade even though it didn't have a ranking system other than leaderboards.

ah, I see where I'm missing the point. I'm thinking matching making entirely as 1 on 1... and not ffa, or team matches or clan matches (like in warhawk) I can see you reasoning for not wanting the matchmaking. But with the whole trueskill engine or development, the calculation seems to look at the whole rather than just who got the kill. Meaning your damage done to the other cars would weigh in more than someone just putting the final nail in the coffin.

Jaffe is registered here, I used to sneak around on the old TMA and see how long ago was some of the developers last visit and suprisingly enough, everytime i checked it was within a week they were there (kirk baum and co) ofcourse you can't do that here, but for whatever reason i think that they still check it out the site and someone from here talks to Jaffe on aim. So the possibility is strong.

I agree with you about the interacting, but I don't think that he can at this point - for the reasons of being under contract with sony. But I see his polls as a form of communication with us and is reaching out for support on his new game.  I hope he continues to drop tidbits like this, if nothing else its rebuilding the hype and giving us something to talk about

SACRILEGE!
HERESEY!
LAWSUIT!

wtf I'm dl'ing it anyway...

Looks like a very fun CaC/TM rip off actually

Think I'll get it to!

It was bad in TMBO without any ranking system. (UNLIMS!!!) Could only inmagine how bad it'd be with one. Hence the reason why TMA purists at the time of release would do only Net Damage. Cured the ills of some dickhead dropping a gas can on a red from half the level.

At least if there is a matchmaking.......seriously.....take a page out of Gears Of War 1.....make a rank/unranked server/s.......let people jump in and out as they please but, have the customaization tools for host to tweak the game as the room/player feels like playing. Honestly.......I would believe that would be heaven in a wire.

I know we don't have serious concrete info yet. It's still got to be a generalization of info because, almost all games out have these features. It's a pretty good bet that we'll get these things in the new TM. I'm really hoping that Jaffe and whoever else is working on the project actually does poke their heads in here, and gives us a shout. Or read our bickering.  ;D

if they had the forethought to credit TMA in the credits to Black, I'd say its a safe bet that Jaffe at the least comes in and reads what we have to say. I mean, we are the most dedicated ppl in his fanbase, who discuss the game the most and would have the most valid opinion, or at least I'd like to think so
