As far as slow mo, its nothing new, no, but I like when its used to show the action--which is what Zach does with all his action sequences--not do it for the sake of making it look "cool". I don't see how anyone couldn't appreciate how well Snyder shows action when you have all these other movies where it just looks like a bunch of random fast clips of people doing shit while the camera man looks like hes having an epileptic seizure. The train sequence, which is my favorite from Sucker Punch, shows you ever bit of the action where you see every move, every gunshot, every sword swipe and you feel like you understand whats happening. Its the visual equivalent of someone writing out good dialogue that makes sense and is easy to follow.
And the ending makes sense to me. Don't throw it in with shit like Inception. The movie is about escaping reality within your own mind and that life and reality is what you make of it. We all have to go to these other places and other outlets in order to cope with reality. That is what the movie is trying to say. The title alone says that sometimes life throws a sucker punch at you and you just have to deal with it. There is even a mild undertone of spirituality and having guardian angels in the movie.
Its not the deepest movie ever, but at least, in my opinion, it has a point other than just hot girls with guns. Your "review" of the movie looks like something that was copied and pasted from just about any random internet forum. If you don't like Sucker Punch that's cool, but I think you are dismissing it without actually taking into consideration what it was trying to offer. |

Look at my previous reply before i saw the damn thing. I came in with good expectations. I was thinking "Oh it's probably like the Matrix and not quite as bad as people say it is. Surely people just hate it because of it's popularity and it's an unfair victim of asshole critics". Then i watched the movie...
I understood the whole point of the movie being about escape. Hence why everything looks like a video game. Escape escape escape. Escape from reality, escape from prison, escape from abuse. It's a movie about escape. But from my perspective it worked against the movie.
I literally burst out laughing during the fantasy sequences. It reminded me of the kind of thing i'd imagine when i was in high school. But let me put all my judgment on the hilarious action sequences aside for a moment.
I can't find my self to care about the action when each sequence is just an escape from the actual movie. Or more specifically an escape from Baby Doll dancing. Which i understand why it's there. I can see how one could say "See the action sequences aren't oversexed because we are ignoring a woman being objectified in the real life plot". To that i say "wooptie do you still got an asian girl with metallic eyeliner in a fantasy clockwork steampunk WW1 setting. That is pandering to men way more than a sexy asylum dance."
That comes to my biggest problem. The movie takes it's self too damn seriously. It pulls on my strings as hard as it can, but all it does is snap them leaving me in a state of not giving a shit. I felt jack shit for any of the characters. You have a nearly silent protagonist, who is tagged along by several women who could have been played by anyone with tits willing to jump around with a wire strapped to them. They are in a sad and unfair situation and are fixated on escaping. It's not even a bad plot really. My complaints have everything to do with the direction and not quite as much to do with the plot.
It reminds me of how "scary" Dead Space 2 was. At a certain point i think to my self, "This action game is trying to provoke me with monsters, darkness, and shit that pops out of nowhere". That is how i felt with the direction and writing for Sucker Punch. "This movie is trying to provoke me with sexy women, drama, and computer animation.".
The difference is i didn't laugh as much at Dead Space 2 because i was in control of it. Okay that is a lie i laughed every single time Issac got killed in a quick time event. Still my point is both Dead Space 2 and Sucker Punch try as hard as they possibly can to evoke something out of me. Which simply tells me that it's building me up over nothing. It's fucking filler and emotional pokes to distract me from how boring it is at the core.
I feel like the director is like "Yeah you like that shit don't you? *kicks on licensed music* Check this out i'm gonna make em fight Orcs with sub machine guns now. Then a dragon is gonna chase a B-17! Holy shit i bet you are blown away. Okay now lets watch the main character be weird but attractive. Toss in some bad guys exploiting the ladies... and HOLY SHIT YOU ARE IN THE FUTURE AND THERE ARE ROBOTS AND THEY ARE USING SWORDS ON THE ROBOTS AND THEY ARE ON A TRAIN HEADED TO A CITY WITH A FUCKING BOMB ON IT HOLY SHIT!"
Not only is most of the action imaginary within the film. But for everyone talking about how awesome the CG and action is. It looks so digitized i found my self begging for a normal human vs human fight.
But oh no i'm looking at it wrong you say. The fights happened inside Baby Dolls mind so that is why things work like they do. Well that's just fine. But that is another reason why the plot seemed to thin and boring to me.
The most interesting point in the movie is when the fantasy sequence is broken by the stone cold reality that is failure. I was thinking "Ooh interesting, now we can continue with the plot... and they did. Which is okay i guess. But like a constipated turd the story forces it's way out. Then pulls a double twist of "Oh all is lost" and "Oh this was the plan the entire time". With a movie like this you expect a few twist and turns. But at that point in the film i stopped giving a shit.
And the action sequences. Those were literally hillarious for me to watch. They were soooo bad. Pandering so hard to 18 to 35 year old males it's hilarious. I actually felt guilty for watching it, like i was contributing to some kind of stereotype.
The contrast between the real life set pieces and actors compared to the animated characters and backgrounds is way too high. When i hear that a movie has good CG animation. I imagine it to be seamless. But there is just so much wrong with the CG in the movie.
The live actors look great. The sets and costume design are excellent. But the CG just ruins all of it. For instance the Robots in the Train sequance look so computer generated i was questioning weather that fantasy took place in real reality. Or if they were fighting robots inside of a computer inside of her head while she is dancing. Or if her imagination sucks and that's why the Robots look more primitive than T-2000.
It's like somewhere along the lines they got lazy and said "Fuck it make everything CG we blew too much money on the clockwork zombies." It shows so badly.
They totally abused the slow motion camera.
1. Slow motion bullet
2. Slow motion axe
3 Slow motion punch to the face (looks like shit, they should have punched the actor harder to make it look real)
That is just off the top of my head. I bet i can go through the movie again and list at least 10 slow motion shots taken almost straight out of other movies or video games.
Which normally would not bother me so much. I'd give it a pass and say "Well there are only so many angles you can shoot a projectile from". But people talk about the action sequences like they are a amazing blend of Wire Fu and CG animation the likes of which hasn't been seen since the Matrix. I was let down there. the 100 Smith Fight is way better than anything in Sucker Punch. (though i admit i burst out laughing during that too)
People made the story sound really deep too. Like it was some extremely intelligent commentary on the thoughts of prisoners (prisoners often think of escape weather they are guilty or innocent). With some random hoopla about men dominating women.
I guess they got me there. It was exactly what they said it was. Except that Deep is subjective and from my perspective it's knees to the ground sucking my dick begging me to love it.
I'm not saying other people are as stupid as i believe the movie is. But i will say that they have no clue when they are being pandered to.
This movie is the american equivalent of anime.
Oh and the ending sucked. Let me spoil it. The ending is basically the one surviving girl getting on a bus and leaving. The driver of the bus is the guy who helped them along their imaginary/real escape. The idea being that it was all destined to end that way.
So we have "It was all in your head... BUT NOW IT'S REAL" combined with "All your friends are dead or were left behind." topped off with "The bad guy gets arrested after he can't rape the main character because she is emotionless to his advances post lobotomy, a lobotomy that occurred because the male orderly forged the female doctors signature. Which is the ultimate cause for his arrest during the failed rape."
A bunch of preachy ass twisty sparkly fantasy bullshit. Ooh what a good ending. Rapists are bad and the power of escape through imagination is so strong it will manifest in reality.
Either that or she is still imagining shit when she gets on the bus and she's actually climbing into a rusted out septic tank. That would be a better ending.
