Title: So What Do You Think of Obama?
Post by Brontok on 04/04/09 at 00:22:33
He's been in the office for about 90 days. How has he fared so far? Obama's slogan is change and that's what I think we need now. He has outrageous budget plans that will send the nation spiraling into debt. But I think increasing the debt to that magnitude may be necessary to get out of this mess.

Too early to tell still. This 20 dollar a week thing for the stimuls was dumb and we shoulda gotten the lump sum like last year.

What did I ever do to you?

Anyways back on topic. I assume this $20 will be added onto people's paychecks every week. But what about unemployed people? Will they just be receiving $20 checks in the mail?

I actually hadn't heard about the $20 part of the stimulus. I think it's better like this than a lump sum, so people are more likely to use it on stuff like food or bills or important stuff as opposed to going out and buying a new TV or something.

Still, the concept of giving citizens free money for no reason doesn't strike me as the best approach to the problem. I'd prefer the money to be used as incentives to motivate people to be more productive.

Tax incentives. Like say you dont drive to work, you take public transit. Or you bought a hybrid or EV car instead of an SUV. You recycle, you used less electricity; by buying energy efficient appliances, dishwashers, dryers, fridges, a/c units... etc.

The government could say 'we will give you [X] amount of dollars back for purchasing green "stuff" (see above) then. It would influence people to buy appliances that are wasteful, buy a better car with lower emissions, and perhaps entice them by the little bonus cash they get back.

Nightshade doesnt want the government to just toss you money for no reason, he wants people to have something to show for it, so they are rewarded for their smarter "choices".

I'm not sure I agree about citizens but the automakers sent that money down the toilet.

Yea in the next few weeks our paychecks will see more money like an extra 15 - 20 dollars if you are working and fal under certain criteria.

I prefer the lump sum like last year. What the fuck am i supposed to do with 20 extra bucks?

Bingo, that's exactly the kind of thing I was getting at. You could apply that logic to just about any sort of positive goal really - perhaps an incentive to businesses for providing health coverage for example.

Pay the bills, buy food, donate to TMA, or save it until you have as much as you did in a lump sum and then buy whatever you bought last time with the lump sum.

I agree I would much rather have 20 bucks a month than a lump sum at the end of the year, but that's just me.  My lump sum went toward using it as a down payment when buying a new car last year.  So I didn't see it anyway.

Great. A political post. Just awesome.  :(

20 bucks, or lump sum.......you'll be needing to report it as taxable income next year when you do your taxes. I had to report that 1600 I got last year. It makes no difference IMO. They're just getting some of it right back.

I agree with making incentives to making people more producitve than just a handout. Don't see how with unemployment being so high. It's almost a catch 22 here. You want people to work or spend money wizely or responcibly but yet, the climate for alot of people ins't that way.

I say Anarchy

I talked with Synthr the other day. I'm looking to recruit for the USRA.
(United States Revolutionary Army)

Anyone interested, and lives through it will be put on the new money. Of course I will be Presidento. I have an army already waiting to take control, but it will be my generals who will be handelers and recruiters.

I am not disclosing this army untill we are ready to strike.

Completely. I'm like Tyler Durden-ish. I would seriously love to be able to propagate all this to real life. Unfortunately the extension of my reach is not as far reaching as I'd like it to be.

You want to be on the 20 Seven?

Just so you know I'm only fighting for the money. I could care less if your country is liberated or revolutionized. Put my face on that $50 bill and we're set.

Note that I think it's probably a mistake too, but saying it makes no difference because it'll be taxed is like saying it's not worth having a career because your income will be taxed.

He's black. He's the President. He's trying. I'll report back in a couple of years when we've actually had ample time to evaluate his presidency.

I know what you mean. I just find it ironic that you get handed your tax dollars as a stimulus, then need to report it as income the following year, so they can tax it again. That's what I mean.

7 is going to be 20. Synthr said he wan'ts the 50. Who else?

It depends on your situation, such as:

How many incomes in your household
Married
Filed Taxes jointly
Retired
etc.

all these and more are taken into consideration when they give you anywheres from 15-50 dollars extra a paycheck in the stimulus. If you are retired you get the lump sum. SS ppl get lump sum too i think. I am sure they will label on your paystub what the stimulus amount is.

so if you're unemployed, you're screwed, right? doesnt matter anyway.. I didnt see mine last yr either, altho I was lucky. at the time they filed it, I was married but by the time it was sent out, I was divorced and my ex-wife had already moved out. I got one letter saying they were sending me $1500, but sent me a letter the next day saying they were intercepting it for back child support.. it was bittersweet, 'cause between that and my tax return last yr, my back child support went from $4k to $312.. too bad I didnt get any money to save for these hard times I got now

I also heard that the new stimulus was supposed to be more geared for business owners as an incentive to hire more employees..

if you wanna extend your reach, Mag, start up a fight club with yourself and let it snowball..

I tried to do that, but I kept loosing and getting my ass kicked. Unfortunately, there are better plans in store he says.

He's not telling me anything, and it pisses me off. I'm gonna have to jump him soon.
